Brad Pitt is known for a remarkably strong list of films, but even he admits to having made some choices he’s not proud of. While many fans consider movies like Cool World and Cutting Class to be his weakest work, Pitt actually dislikes a different film from the 1990s even more.
I remember reading an interview with Brad Pitt from way back in 1997, in Empire magazine. They asked him what he considered the toughest point in his career so far, and even though he’d made a few films early on he wasn’t proud of, he pointed to making The Devil’s Own. He basically said the whole production was really difficult and there was a lot of tension on set.
I recently got into trouble for comments I made about the movie The Devil’s Own,” he admitted. “I won’t repeat that mistake. I apologize.”
Pitt was referring to his earlier candid comments about how difficult making the film had been. He’d famously told Newsweek, in an interview meant to publicize the movie, that the production was a complete mess and incredibly disorganized.
Pitt once revealed they initially had a solid script for the movie, where he played an IRA soldier opposite Harrison Ford. However, it was ultimately scrapped. He described the experience of having to improvise everything on the spot as incredibly stressful and absurd.
The actor was upset because he felt the lack of preparation disrespected the art of filmmaking. He stated, with unusual honesty for a leading man, that it was “the most irresponsible filmmaking I’ve ever seen,” and he was shocked by it.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, and criticism specifically aimed at Brad Pitt’s attempt at an Irish accent, the film became a learning experience for the actor regarding the risks of being too open with the public. He later tried to downplay his initial concerns, saying he actually liked how the film turned out, but the whole experience made him much more cautious during interviews and promotional events.
By early 2026, Brad Pitt, now 62, has moved past relying on improvisation. He’s currently enjoying widespread praise for his film F1, a sports drama released in theaters and on streaming platforms last year. The film recently earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
The actor is generating buzz for his role in the upcoming film The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a project that reunites him with director David Fincher and features a script by Quentin Tarantino. The film continues the story from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Brad Pitt will reprise his role as a famous stuntman and also star in a new action-adventure film called Heart of the Beast, directed by David Ayer. Most of the movie was filmed in the challenging landscapes of Queenstown, New Zealand. Pitt plays a former Navy SEAL who must fight for survival after a disaster, with the help of his retired military dog and fellow actor J.K. Simmons.
