Several popular cast members are leaving Saturday Night Live, continuing a recent trend. Ego Nwodim, Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, and Emil Wakim departed over the summer, before the current 51st season began. Bowen Yang, who quickly became a fan favorite after joining in season 45, was also considering leaving, but initially decided to stay. However, he will now be leaving SNL after this week’s show.
As first reported by Deadline, Bowen Yang’s last episode as a cast member will be tomorrow night, featuring Ariana Grande as host and Cher as the musical guest. It’s almost as if Yang specifically requested those guests! He quickly became known for creating viral moments during his time on the show, with bits like the Titanic iceberg on Weekend Update and his characters – including a straight man with relationships with Gina Gershon and Sydney Sweeney, a gay Oompa Loompa, and George Santos – becoming instant favorites. He also made history as the first featured player to receive a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Success has opened doors for Yang, quickly establishing him as a popular comedian in Hollywood. He’s appeared in films like Bros and Fire Island, and played Pfannee in both Wicked and Wicked: For Good. He also co-hosts the Las Culturistas podcast with Matt Rogers, which has even been adapted into a Bravo awards show. Whatever Yang does next, it’s sure to be fantastic.
Bowen Yang will host his final episode of Saturday Night Live on Saturday, December 20th, at 11:30 PM on NBC.
