‘Booster Gold’ Series Moves Forward With David Jenkins Writing the Pilot

The Booster Gold series is back in play.

DC Studios and HBO Max are reported to be officially moving ahead with the Booster Gold series.

Through Deadline, it’s announced that David Jenkins is penning the pilot for Our Flag Means Death. If the series gets greenlit, Jenkins is anticipated to take on the role of showrunner as well.

DC Studios Gives Booster a Boost

Two years back, the heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, initially unveiled that Booster Gold would be part of their DC Universe reboot. The concept they presented was an engaging blend of comedy and adventure, centered around a superhero from the future who, with rudimentary technology, pretends to navigate the present day, driven by his obsession with fame.

However, the project had encountered a standstill for some time now. Earlier, its original showrunner (Gunn) announced in December that “Booster Gold” wasn’t quite ready yet, and contrary to internet buzz, Gunn appeared to dismiss rumors about Kumail Nanjiani being cast in the lead role.

Now that Jenkins has joined the team, the show seems to be gaining new energy just as DC prepares for its Comic-Con promotion in San Diego. This weekend, Gunn and John Cena are set to attend the SDCC to promote “Peacemaker” Season 2, so perhaps Gunn might share some insights on the overall production schedule.

Who Is Booster Gold?

Born by Dan Jurgens, Booster Gold (originally Michael Jon “Booster” Carter) is a resident of Gotham City. Once a disgraced college football star kicked out for gambling, he later transforms into a time-traveling superhero. Despite being a member of the Justice League, Booster Gold is renowned for his self-centeredness, craving for recognition, and flamboyant actions. His name was bestowed upon him by Ronald Reagan, in acknowledgment of Booster’s heroic act to save the former president.

Since the late 1980s, this character has been widely beloved, frequently appearing as a comical contrast to more solemn heroes. Fans have taken a liking to Chris Pratt, who portrayed Star-Lord in the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy movies under James Gunn’s direction.

Jenkins Returns to HBO

As a passionate movie enthusiast reminiscing on the small screen, if Booster Gold steps forward, it’ll bring me face-to-face with none other than the talented Mr. Jenkins once again, reuniting us with HBO. His swashbuckling comedy, Our Flag Means Death, unfortunately met its end prematurely in early 2024, after just two seasons, despite a dedicated fan base. At that time, Jenkins expressed his gratitude to the HBO leadership for their backing, even as he lamented the show’s untimely conclusion.

Jenkins also previously created the cult sci-fi comedy People of Earth on TBS.

What’s Next for DC TV?

The announcement arrives with momentum, as HBO Max is currently basking in the success of “The Penguin,” a production that has garnered 24 Emmy nominations across various categories. Among these recognitions are nods for Limited Anthology Series, as well as individual performances by Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.

It’s mentioned that Gunn and Safran might also be contemplating additional DC spinoffs, featuring shows centered around characters like Mister Terrific (portrayed by Edi Gathegi) and Jimmy Olsen (depicted by Skyler Gisondo), who are from the Superman universe.

The Lanterns TV series also recently wrapped filming on its first season.

Peacemaker Season 2 premiers August 21, 2025.
