In a recent interview on the Rushmore podcast, former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick commended Elon Musk, saying he’s well-suited to lead a video game company, according to TWIV.
For over three decades, Bobby Kotick guided Activision Blizzard, growing it from a small company worth just $500,000 into a major industry leader that Microsoft eventually acquired for $75.4 billion.
During the podcast, Kotick stated that Elon Musk would be the ideal owner of any gaming company, emphasizing that no one is more qualified to build and manage one.
While Musk enjoys games like Quake, Diablo 4, and Path of Exile 2, his gaming experience is somewhat focused on those titles. He’s openly stated he’s used services to improve his in-game ranking, explaining that it’s difficult to compete with Asian players who also use such services. Beyond playing, Musk is developing a gaming project through his company xAI, with plans for an AI-generated game in 2026 and the possibility of fully AI-created games within the next three years.
Experienced people in the gaming industry, including Glen Schofield, who used to lead Sledgehammer Games, have questioned whether Elon Musk can actually follow through on his plans.
When asked if Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter (now X) was a mistake, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick strongly defended Musk. He explained that Musk needed to own the platform to improve it for everyone. Kotick believes Musk is uniquely capable of the complex work he’s undertaking, stating that very few people could achieve the same things, and that Musk’s focus on improving society and potentially “saving humanity” is commendable.
Although Kotick acknowledges Musk’s talent and innovative spirit, some argue that successfully leading a game company demands extensive experience in game creation itself, rather than simply a passion for games or interest in artificial intelligence.
