Bluesky Will Launch Flashes, a Photo Sharing App and Potential Alternative to Instagram

The possibility of another significant shift in social media platforms may be imminent. Initially, the massive exodus from what I often refer to as Twitter (X) towards Bluesky occurred post-2024 Presidential election and due to overall decline on the app. This transition has brought joy to many, including myself. Additionally, the news of TikTok’s potential ban is driving users towards Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote, a Chinese video-centric social platform. With Meta’s recent changes in fact-checking, moderation, and hate speech policies that no longer provide certain protections, there are now many who are considering leaving Facebook and Instagram. Interestingly, TechCrunch suggests that Bluesky could potentially offer an alternative to Instagram called Flashes.

Software Engineer Sebastian Vogelsang is creating the Flashes application using Bluesky’s AT Protocol. Content added to Flashes will show up on a Bluesky user’s profile, and pictures they post on Bluesky will transfer to Flashes. The app won’t prioritize text-based posts but instead will concentrate on photos and videos lasting no more than one minute. Users can create slideshows featuring up to four images within the app. Thus, while Flashes is not intended to be a direct substitute for Instagram due to its lack of common features, it could serve as an appealing destination for individuals seeking a platform primarily focused on image sharing.

In the upcoming weeks, we’re planning to debut Flashes. Keep an eye out by following the Flashes account on Bluesky for updates.
