It seems like every day brings news of another unnecessary remake, revival, or reimagining in the entertainment world. It’s baffling why creators keep revisiting old ideas hoping for a hit. But that’s just my opinion as a writer. According to Deadline, A24 and Michaela Coel are now working on a reboot of the film Bloodsport.
The 1988 movie Bloodsport was a major breakthrough for Jean-Claude Van Damme. It helped transform him from a skilled martial artist from Belgium into a global star. In the film, he plays Frank Dux, an Army officer who fights in a secret, high-stakes tournament in Hong Kong called the Kumite.
The original film was a big hit and led to three follow-up movies. While it’s unknown if Jean-Claude Van Damme will be involved, Michaela Coel is thrilled to be rebooting Bloodsport with A24. She’s writing and directing the new version, which will likely feature a female protagonist.
She expressed her long-held admiration for fighters and the incredible dedication, strength, and solitude the sport requires. She’s thrilled to delve into this world, particularly with A24, and is eager to get started.
Currently, no actors have been cast for the project. We need to watch for who becomes available and takes on the roles.
