In response to Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds submitting subpoenas recently, Justin Baldoni‘s legal team is countering with a strong stance. They are seeking the release of phone and text data as the legal dispute between them continues, stemming from Blake and Ryan’s role in the ongoing case regarding “It Ends with Us.
In a letter dispatched on Friday, February 14, Baldoni’s legal representative, Mitchell Schuster, characterized the subpoenas as excessively wide-ranging and unjustified in a communication to U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman.
In my own words, let me emphasize that these subpoenas are exceptionally wide-ranging, intrusive, and unusual. This isn’t a criminal investigation; I, along with the others mentioned, am not associated with law enforcement agencies like the FBI. Instead, we are engaged in civil litigation.
In my professional opinion as a lifestyle expert, I find myself in a situation where I’m shedding light on a recent development. Subpoenas have been issued to telecommunications giants like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. These subpoenas demand a broad range of phone data from these companies, encompassing call logs, text messages, location details, and browsing history, dating back over several years. My team and I are voicing concerns about this extensive data request, as it may potentially compromise the private information of numerous individuals. Furthermore, we believe that this data is not essential for the ongoing case.
The dispute began in December 2024 after Blake Lively alleged that Justin Baldoni had sexually harassed her on set during the production of ‘It Ends with Us.’ Additionally, she asserted that Baldoni and his associates attempted to tarnish her image by disseminating unfavorable tales about her.
Baldoni has flatly refuted all the allegations that have been made against him. Back in January, he initiated a lawsuit for $400 million, targeting Lively, Reynolds, their publicist Leslie Sloane, and her PR firm. He claimed they were involved in civil extortion and defamation. This legal battle, titled Lively v. Wayfarer Studios et al., is set to commence trial on March 9, 2026.
In reaction to Baldoni’s memo, a representative from Lively inquired as to why Justin Baldoni is reluctant to comply with the subpoenas if he truly has proof backing his statements. The spokesperson expressed this sentiment to PEOPLE by asking, “If they have so much evidence, then why are they scared to share it?
The spokesperson for Lively further mentioned about supposed communications between Baldoni and his public relations team. He stated, “Mr. Baldoni and the parties associated with Wayfarer have acknowledged that Ms. Lively expressed her worries on several occasions.
They confessed that they devised a strategy to disseminate tales portraying Ms. Lively as a ‘bullied’ individual and an abuser of feminism. They acknowledged concealing information and boasted about manipulating online discussions.
Lawyer Bryan Freedman, representing Baldoni, also addressed the subpoenas, describing them as excessive. On February 12th, he stated, “Subpoenas are a common aspect of legal proceedings. However, what is extraordinary are the Lively Parties’ requests.
For the past 2.5 years, Freedman stated they’ve been requesting all calls, texts, logs, and real-time location details, irrespective of who was involved in the communication or the content of the messages.
He pointed out, “This extensive fishing trip clearly shows they’re grasping for any factual evidence to support their undeniably false allegations. In vain, they won’t.
Schuster has urged Judge Liman to resolve the disagreement promptly, implying that phone companies might imminently meet Lively and Reynolds’ demands.
