Blake Lively Reveals How Lady Deadpool’s Look Was Inspired by Her Gossip Girl Era

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of art and life, I find the story of Blake Lively and Lady Deadpool absolutely fascinating. The way her real-life persona inspired the creation of this iconic superhero character is nothing short of serendipitous.

After its release, news about Deadpool and Wolverine still buzzes around. Marvel’s groundbreaking R-rated production brought a surprising array of cameos that left viewers in awe. Stars like Chris Evans as Human Torch and Wesley Snipes as Blade graced the screen. Yet, among these superheroes, Lady Deadpool, portrayed by Blake Lively – who is Ryan Reynolds’ wife in real life – stole the show from an alternate universe.

It was widely assumed that Blake Lively landed the part of Lady Deadpool due to her marriage. But recently, fans learned that the character’s creator, Rob Liefeld, drew inspiration for Lady Deadpool from Blake’s Gossip Girl persona instead.

Rob Liefeld took inspiration from Blake Lively to create the Lady Deadpool character

Rob Liefeld, well-known comic book writer, shared on Instagram that Serena from Blake Lively’s Gossip Girl role served as his muse for creating Lady Deadpool in 2010. As an avid fan of Gossip Girls and Team Serena supporter, he drew inspiration directly from Lively’s character to create the blonde version of Deadpool.

In 2009, Marvel approached me to create Lady Deadpool. My wife and I were big fans of Gossip Girl, particularly Team Serena. So, I gave her blonde hair and modeled her after Blake Lively. When Blake eventually reacted to this, I was overjoyed. Every time I met her in person, I found myself speechless. Later, Kevin Feige shared that Marvel was considering the Deadpool Corps, which made me optimistic.

Blake Lively on inspiring the character of Lady Deadpool

Surprisingly, it wasn’t until two years ago that Lively herself became aware of inspiring Lady Deadpool in her portrayal of the character in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Reflecting on this unexpected connection, the actress pondered over how her work on the project in 2010 had laid the foundation for her influence on the iconic superhero character.

Lively expressed her awe over the universe’s mysteries while penning down her deep-rooted bond with Deadpool. In 2010, she prepared to shoot Green Lantern alongside her husband Ryan Reynolds, who later introduced her to the Deadpool persona. Surprisingly, before that, Liefeld had created Lady Deadpool based on Lively’s likeness but kept this secret from her for a dozen years. Now, the actress gets the opportunity to embody that very character.

In the year 2010, prior to all the current events, Rob Liefeld illustrated an unmasked Lady Deadpool for the first time as shared in his post (slide next). At that time, the Deadpool movie did not exist and Rob was unaware of Ryan Reynolds’ involvement with the project. Twelve years later, I chanced upon Rob’s post, and just a year after that, production for Deadpool 3 began. Today, it graces the silver screens. Isn’t it fascinating how the universe weaves its magical sense of humor into our lives? (Gossip Girl star’s words)

Liefeld’s words caused quite a stir among Lively and the fanbase, who were thrilled about her relationship with Lady Deadpool, regardless of her husband’s involvement. The release of Deadpool & Wolverine on July 26, 2024, in theaters has kept this excitement alive.
