The Black Panther video game, initially conceived in 2023 by a talented and multifaceted team, has unfortunately been scrapped. This decision comes from Electronic Arts (EA), who are discontinuing the studio responsible for the game’s production – Cliffhanger Games.
According to IGN, recent reports suggest that a significant number of layoffs – over 300 people – have taken place at Electronic Arts (EA) in recent times.
Why was the Black Panther video game canceled?
In an email to employees, Laura Miele, head of EA Entertainment, clarified that the current round of project cancellations and job reductions are actually strategic moves aimed at optimizing our workflow and focusing more intently on sectors with potential for significant expansion.
Miele stated that these choices are challenging because they impact individuals we’ve collaborated with, mentored, and cherished memories with. We’re making every effort to assist them, even going as far as exploring possibilities within EA, where we’ve had past success helping people transition into new positions.
She emphasized that we should concentrate more on “enhancing our attention and channeling our innovative resources towards the biggest potential expansion areas.
Focusing on proven, successful IPs
In her email, Miele mentioned that Electronic Arts (EA) will concentrate on a limited number of mainstay franchises: Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. Additionally, she verified ongoing investment in Motive’s Iron Man game as well as the third Star Wars Jedi title. Although some reductions are happening, EA will keep operating its mobile division, while BioWare is still working on the next Mass Effect installment.
Miele’s communication aligns with a previous announcement from CEO Andrew Wilson, indicating their intention to cease the creation of upcoming licensed intellectual properties that they don’t foresee thriving in our evolving market.
Controversy and delays surround Black Panther
The Black Panther video game has faced criticism recently due to the revelation that one of its developers, in an attempt to foster a secure working environment, had not previously employed individuals of Caucasian descent.
The “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra” game by Skydance, which includes the character Black Panther, has been pushed back for release to the year 2026 as well.
What’s next for Black Panther?
The Eyes of Wakanda animated series premieres this August on Disney+ with four episodes.
Following the release of “Wakanda Forever”, it has been confirmed that Letitia Wright (Shuri), Tenoch Huerta Mejia (Namor), and Winston Duke (M’Baku) will all be part of the upcoming film, “Avengers: Doomsday”.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that yours truly, Ryan Coogler, is cooking up something amazing: Black Panther 3! This epic sequel will hit the screens post the highly anticipated Secret Wars. And guess who’s joining the Wakandan family? None other than Denzel Washington! Can’t wait to see it unfold on the big screen!
