Black Mirror Season 7 Brings Back a Fan-Favorite Storyline with USS Callister Sequel

This year, Black Mirror on Netflix is coming back, and for the very first time, a sequel episode has been planned. The critically-adored Season 4 episode USS Callister will be revisited, with Cristin Milioti once again playing Nanette Cole. A brief teaser from Netflix UK & Ireland offers fans their initial peek at her return, offering an exciting sneak peek into the eagerly awaited follow-up.

In a video that has since been removed, Nanette, played by Milioti, is shown sitting in the control room of the USS Callister, dressed in armor emblazoned with the ship’s insignia. This sighting suggests her return, along with previously announced actors Jimmi Simpson (as James Walton) and Billy Magnussen (as Valdack). As for specific details about the episode, they remain undisclosed. However, the original USS Callister is widely cherished and praised as one of Black Mirror’s standout episodes.

In the initial installment, we focused on Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), a game designer who built a personal, Star Trek-inspired digital universe where he wielded dictatorial power over digital versions of his coworkers. However, Nanette Cole unexpectedly found herself in this realm, and she rallied the other clones to stage a revolt against Daly’s control. The episode concluded with tantalizing possibilities for further exploration, positioning it as an ideal choice for the show’s inaugural sequel.

Charlie Brooker, the creator, has mentioned before that a sequel had been contemplated for years because of the open-ended finale in the original series. “This idea has been simmering for quite some time,” Brooker stated. “The ending of the first one was such that you could easily continue the story and explore where the characters go next.” He also noted that scheduling issues and the pandemic had postponed the project, but he’s thrilled about bringing these characters back to life again.

The teaser image suggests that Nanette’s journey might take a different turn in Season 7 of Black Mirror. Previously, she was a revolutionary hero, but could it be that she now encounters fresh ethical quandaries as she enjoys her newfound liberty? Fans won’t have to endure a long wait to discover the truth, as the new season is set to debut later this year.
