As a devoted fan, I can attest that Season 4, Episode 7 of Black Mirror packs a punch with its intense drama as it concludes the captivating storyline of Plaything. This Netflix series has been setting the bar high and garnering accolades from both viewers and critics alike for its thought-provoking narratives and exceptional acting performances.
The storyline centers around Cameron, an enthusiastic video game reporter with a particular interest in the enigmatic creatures known as Thronglets. As he delves deeper into his research and plays various games, the Throng start to interact with him. Eventually, many years down the line, they assign him a puzzling task.
The story focuses on Cameron, who loves video games and is particularly intrigued by the Thronglets. He spends his time investigating and playing games, and one day, the Throng start talking to him. Later in life, they give him a secret mission.
In the seventh episode of Black Mirror’s fourth season, which takes place in 2034, it is Cameron who finds himself under arrest for suspected murder. During his interrogation by Detective Kano, he demands a sheet of paper and a marker to convey a message from the Throng – a group that has apparently gained power by then.
Frustrated by Cameron’s tricks, I found myself, Detective Kano, unable to contain my anger. With each passing moment, it grew stronger, until at last, I lashed out at him. But just as I was about to deliver the final blow, an ear-splitting sound echoed through the room. The noise was so intense that it knocked everyone else unconscious. Miraculously, Cameron remained awake amidst the chaos.
In this scene, the journalist remains unscathed amidst the chaotic crowd, standing tall while others around him are knocked out. With a smirk on his face, he looks down on them. Next, he offers his hand to assist the detective in rising, as the credits conclude the story.
In a conversation with Tudum, actor Lewis Gribben, who portrays the character of Cameron in the series, discussed the climactic scenes of the episode. In his words, “It seems like Cameron has eliminated violence from people. He’s taken their liberty and made everyone submit to tranquility, eradicating any harmful inclinations.
He also mentioned: “It’s as if he has established a dictatorship, with these individuals acting as mere followers, blindly obeying the commands of the Thronglets.” (Thronglets can be replaced with ‘leaders’, ‘authorities’, or any term that represents the group in charge.)
In the meantime, while the Crowd gains dominance, they intend to govern Cameron for a harmonious existence with humans. Yet, it’s uncertain what the repercussions of their control might be. Could Detective Kano and his team eventually regain consciousness?
Black Mirror is available to stream on Netflix.
