Mark Twain famously said that truth is stranger than fiction, and lately, it often feels like fiction. It would be wonderful if that fiction were a happy one—a world of peace and kindness. But with things like artificial intelligence allowing people to seemingly communicate with the deceased, it feels more like we’re living in a dark, unsettling story, like an episode of Black Mirror. It makes you wonder how the show can continue to be relevant when real life is already so bleak. Apparently, we’re about to find out—Netflix has ordered another season, the eighth, of the series.
Charlie Brooker announced to Netflix’s Tudum that Black Mirror is returning for an eighth season. He hopes the new season will feel distinctly like Black Mirror, and shared that he’s already started brainstorming ideas, feeling inspired by how quickly real-world events seem to mirror the show’s themes. He’s glad the show has a future, especially as reality continues to catch up to its fictional scenarios.
Okay, let’s be real – is another season of Black Mirror even necessary at this point? It feels like we’re already living in a Black Mirror episode! Honestly, I’m starting to wonder how the show can possibly shock us anymore. Charlie Brooker’s series has always warned us about the dangers of technology, but it feels like society is determined to create those very problems anyway. What could season eight possibly reveal that’s scarier than the stuff we’re already dealing with in the real world?
We’re excited about the return of Black Mirror, particularly after enjoying season seven. However, we’re also worried that some of the show’s most disturbing episodes might be misinterpreted and used as guides by those with harmful intentions.

I always think about how unsettlingly realistic some stories can be, but just because something could happen doesn’t mean we actually want it to. Especially when it comes to shows like Black Mirror – part of what makes it so brilliant is that it explores these scary ‘what ifs’ that we’re glad are still just fiction!
