One is compelled to observe, with a certain detached amusement, that the latest whims of fortune – those digital phantoms known as cryptocurrencies – have birthed a new class of… let us call them ‘enthusiasts.’ The Financial Times, that sober chronicler of commerce, reports these individuals, flush with coin not of the realm but of the algorithm, are now setting their sights (and considerable funds) upon the more refined pleasures of existence. Cruise lines and private aerial conveyances, always eager to accommodate the well-heeled, are now, it seems, graciously accepting these… novel forms of payment.
FXAIR, purveyors of swift passage at a modest starting price of $6,500 per hour – a sum, one imagines, easily dismissed by our crypto-magnates – are amongst the first to extend a welcoming hand. The Times assures us they are receiving these ‘savvy’ clients with open arms. Honestly, one pictures a barely concealed sigh of relief and a frantic scramble to understand block chains.
Last year, Virgin Voyages, with a show of admirable adaptability, boldly declared its acceptance of Bitcoin. One wonders if the captain now demands payment in satoshis. 🧐
And naturally, the purveyors of terrestrial delights – those luxurious hotels and exclusive yacht clubs – are not to be outdone. They, too, are angling to attract the attention (and the wallets) of these young, digitally-minted millionaires, and even, dare we say, billionaires.
The Counting of Coins (A Most Difficult Task)
To ascertain the precise number of these crypto-fortified individuals proves… remarkably elusive. The very nature of their holdings, shrouded in that curious anonymity so prized by the digital age, renders precise accounting a Sisyphean labor.
However, last August, CNBC, with its usual air of authority, ventured to estimate some 172,300 souls possessing over $1 million in the ethereal currency. Furthermore, a not inconsiderable number – over 300, in fact – have amassed fortunes exceeding $100 million, and a select few (a mere 28, if one is to believe the reports from New World Wealth and Henley & Partners) have even attained the dizzying heights of billionaire status. One can only imagine the matching tracksuits.
Given the recent, shall we say, *vigorous* appreciation of Bitcoin lately flirting with the astronomical figure of $124,128 it is safe to assume the ranks of these crypto-millionaires have swelled considerably in the intervening months. Perhaps they are buying up all the caviar. 🤔
The Rise of the Traveling Elite
McKinsey, those arbiters of modern economic trends, predict that the spending on such indulgences, this “luxury travel,” will exceed $54 billion within three short years. A staggering sum, enough to build a small nation, or, more likely, to finance a series of exceedingly lavish vacations.
Indeed, the demand for this particular segment – this pursuit of comfort and exclusivity – is expected to outpace all others. The modern human, it appears, has an insatiable appetite for expensive destinations.
The truly wealthy – those possessing a net worth exceeding $30 million – display a marked preference for remote locales, accessible only by the most direct (and expensive) means: the private airplane. One shudders to think of the turbulence, of course, but one can’t have everything.
And, most strikingly, the vast majority of this clientele – roughly 80% – are younger than sixty. A generation raised on convenience, it seems, now demands it with a degree of financial force that is, to say the least, rather remarkable. It leaves one to wonder what delights the next generation will bestow upon us. 🤷
