Bitcoin. It’s down, you see. More than forty percent from its high. Gold, meanwhile, is doing alright, thank you very much. A funny thing, this. We have troubles in the world, naturally, and people expect something to hold value. So it goes.
Where It Might Go
There are these prediction markets now. People bet on things. Political races, the weather, whether Bitcoin will hit a hundred and fifty thousand dollars by 2026. The markets say eleven percent. Eleven. That’s a low number. It peaked around one hundred and twenty-six thousand before, a while ago.
Getting back to even one hundred and twenty thousand? Twenty-one percent chance. Not much better. If you bought it high, well, don’t ask me. I just report the numbers. It’s a good reminder to ask yourself why you bought anything, really. We all have our reasons.
Unproven, Still
Cryptocurrencies are…speculative. The price swings prove that. Emotions are at work. The idea was that Bitcoin could be like gold. A store of wealth. But when things get tense, people buy gold. Bitcoin? Not so much. The prediction markets suggest this will continue.
If you thought it would protect you from trouble, it hasn’t. It’s made things…more interesting, perhaps. A little extra worry for your money. Maybe it’s time to reconsider what you’re holding, if you’re concerned about the world. Which, naturally, you should be.
A Word to the Wise
The idea of cryptocurrency is…interesting. A new market, still. Untested. Even Bitcoin, the first one, is still figuring things out. What makes it valuable? Nobody really knows. The idea that it’s a safe place for your money in bad times? That doesn’t seem to be working out, does it?
We build these things, these systems, and hope they’ll do what we want. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t. And sometimes, they just…are. So it goes.
