Paul Hellquist, recognized for his work as the lead designer on ‘BioShock‘ and creative director of ‘Borderlands 2’, has teamed up with Shovaen Patel, the principal programmer behind ‘Age of Empires Online’, to establish Stray Kite Studios. Previously, this studio has worked together on ventures such as ‘Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep’ and ‘Fortnite’.
Stray Kite Studios unveiled their debut title, ‘Wartorn’, which is a real-time strategy game blended with roguelike elements, themed in fantasy. This spring, players can get their hands on it during early access through Steam and the Epic Games Store on PC.
In the tale ‘Wartorn’, we trace the path of two elven siblings, Yara and Elani, who are traversing the battle-scarred Isles of Talaur – a once harmonious realm now shattered by fanaticism and the fraying of age-old alliances. Our mission is to escort them safely back to their ancestral abode.
The game provides a unique, solo-player adventure that blends elements from roguelike games, focusing on team-based gameplay. You can gather an assortment of mythical characters like goblins, elves, demons, and treefolk to assemble your Caravan. Prior to each fight, you’ll have the freedom to customize your squad, considering factors such as formation, squad combinations, and clever use of abilities. However, if we suffer defeats in combat, morale will dwindle, and should all hope vanish, the game ends.
In ‘Wartorn’, the battles incorporate dynamic, nature-based strategies where you can utilize elements such as fire, water, lightning, tar, and flora for distinct tactical advantages. For instance, tar intensifies fire, while electricity flows through water. Furthermore, the game integrates a realistic environmental destruction system based on physics, increasing the complexity and unpredictability of skirmishes. A slow-motion mode enables precise instructions to be given, simplifying intricate situations.
In ‘War-torn’, the storyline holds great importance. Every journey home offers unexpected occurrences that demand difficult, consequential choices, like deciding whom to feed or who may live or die. These decisions delve into the complex ethical dilemmas surrounding violence and self-sacrifice.
In simpler terms, ‘Wartorn’ asks players to journey through a fractured universe, seeking meaning and happiness by putting others first. The objective of this game is not just for amusement, but also to stimulate thoughtful consideration about self-sacrifice, endurance, and the ties that bind us together.
As an excited fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the early access launch of ‘Wartorn’. From what I can tell, it promises a refined gaming experience with an impressive variety of units, squad and hero upgrades, family members, diverse biomes, maps, events, and quests. Stray Kite Studios has plans to continuously enrich the content as we move closer to the game’s final release.
