Bill Skarsgard Stayed Away from ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Cast Until Episode 5, Says Amanda Christine – Here’s Why

HBO’s new series, ‘It: Welcome to Derry,’ revisits the frightening story of Pennywise, and the actors are now talking about their initial reactions to seeing Bill Skarsgård in his full costume.

Collider interviewed the actors – including Matilda Lawler, Amanda Christine, and Clara Stack – to get their take on what it was like filming.

Matilda Lawler thought she knew what to expect when facing Pennywise, but the reality was far more frightening. She admitted, “I tried to mentally prepare for how scary Bill would be, but nothing could have truly prepared me. It was a uniquely terrifying experience – I can’t describe it any other way.”

Honestly, he’s just incredibly captivating on screen. Everything works together – his physicality, the costume, the makeup, everything the teams behind those elements created was phenomenal. And it’s not just the look, it’s Bill Skarsgård himself and the energy he brings to the role. He’s a really nice guy when he’s not in character, but as Pennywise, he radiates such terror, it’s truly indescribable. That performance has genuinely stayed with me, it’s haunting.

As a fan, I heard from Amanda Christine that the team did an amazing job keeping Bill Skarsgård—Pennywise himself—a secret from everyone on set! Apparently, they didn’t let us meet him until the big sewer scene. She said it was super scary working with him, but also really cool to finally meet him and experience that moment with him. It sounds like they really built up the suspense!

He completely immerses himself in the character, truly becoming Pennywise. It was amazing – and genuinely frightening – to witness. The fear you see on our faces is completely genuine; we were actually scared!

Clara Stack emphasized the authenticity of the fear depicted in the series. She explained, “The characters’ reactions to seeing him for the first time were our real, honest reactions. Bill truly brings an amazing energy to the set and fully embodies the role of Pennywise – he genuinely scared us.”

When he arrived, we were all surprised to see him. We were a little scared and intimidated, but also really impressed. It was completely different seeing him in person – with his hair, makeup, and costume – compared to seeing him on screen. He’s much taller than he appears in movies, and it was just a really cool experience.

The upcoming series, ‘Welcome to Derry,’ tells the story leading up to the events of the ‘It’ films from 2017 and 2019, and is based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel. The show’s creators, Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, were also involved in making those films. Bill Skarsgård returns, and he’s joined by Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Clara Stack, Amanda Christine, and Mikkal Karim-Fidler. Skarsgård is also an executive producer on the series.

The HBO premiere of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ was on October 26th, and most critics responded favorably.
