The first season of ‘Welcome to Derry‘ revisits the terrifying events of 1962, focusing on a creature known as IT. This entity preys on people’s fears and often takes the form of Pennywise, a frightening clown, causing nightmares for children in Derry. Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Pennywise is genuinely terrifying, tapping into a common fear of clowns – especially those with unsettling smiles. Actor Arian S. Cartaya, who plays the character Rich, understands what it’s like to come face-to-face with this monstrous being.
We asked him about his first impression of Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise on set, and he immediately responded. Before the series, he only knew Pennywise as a frightening, dancing clown and wasn’t familiar with the world of IT. Now, after working on the show and seeing Pennywise up close, he’s become very well-acquainted with the character and its universe.
Let me tell you, interviewing this guy was… strange. Cartaya described him as incredibly intimidating, and it’s easy to see why. He’s a towering six-foot-five, which is enough to make anyone nervous! But it wasn’t just his size. Apparently, before filming each scene, he’d start twitching and giggling – super unsettling. And then there’s his lazy eye… honestly, it just added to the creep factor. It was a really bizarre experience.

Bill Skarsgård, the actor who plays Pennywise, has a unique ability: his left eye doesn’t quite align naturally, allowing him to move it in unsettling ways. He uses this to make his performance even more frightening. Even when Pennywise isn’t on screen in Welcome to Derry, his menacing presence is still strongly felt.
