Bowen Yang is departing from Saturday Night Live during its eighth season. He’ll appear for the last time this Saturday, in an episode hosted by Ariana Grande, his co-star from Wicked, with Cher performing as the musical guest.
Bowen Yang joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in 2018 for Season 44. He quickly moved up, becoming a featured player in Season 45 and a full cast member starting with Season 47. He’s been recognized for his work with Emmy nominations in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025.
His departure is part of a bigger trend of cast members leaving Saturday Night Live before Season 51 began on October 4th. Others who recently left include Ego Nwodim, Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, Emil Wakim, and John Higgins. While it’s not typical for people to leave the show mid-season, stars like Cecily Strong, Molly Shannon, Dana Carvey, Eddie Murphy, and Norm Macdonald have done so in the past for different reasons.
Beyond his work on Saturday Night Live, Bowen Yang is popular for co-hosting the pop culture podcast Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers. He also played a role in the Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, which ran from 2020 to 2023. Yang’s acting credits include appearances in Wicked, Wicked: For Good, the upcoming film The Wedding Banquet (2025), Dicks: The Musical (2023), and Fire Island (2022).
