Bette Midler Shares Betty Davis’ Surprising Reaction to Finding Out She Was Named After Her; Says She Was ‘Very Offended’

As a dedicated follower of Bette Midler‘s illustrious career, I find her recent conversation with Hoda Kotb on Making Space to be a captivating glimpse into her fascinating life and experiences. The revelation of her first encounter with the legendary actress Bette Davis during Elizabeth Taylor’s 60th birthday party adds depth to their already intriguing connection, as Midler was named after Davis but apparently did not receive a warm welcome from her namesake.

In a recent episode of Hoda Kotb’s podcast Making Space on July 24, Bette Midler shared an intriguing story about her initial encounter with the legendary Hollywood actress Bette Davis. The three-time Grammy award winner, who is now 78 years old, revealed that her mother had given her the same name as Davis’. However, Davis reportedly responded unfavorably when she learned this. This memorable encounter took place at Elizabeth Taylor’s 60th birthday party, known for its star-studded guest list and tense atmosphere.

According to Midler, the actress didn’t take kindly to finding out she was named after Davis. This revelation, as shared by Midler on the podcast, highlighted the complex history between the two women and the underlying tensions that marked their initial encounter. The podcast episode brought clarity to the intricate professional and personal dynamics between these influential figures, offering listeners a fascinating glimpse into this significant period in history.

As an obsessed fan, I’d rephrase it like this: Bette Midler once shared a behind-the-scenes story from her early career days. She confessed that she was exhausted, having recently given birth, when she received an invitation to a glamorous event. In contrast to today’s extensive hair and makeup preparations, back then, we were on our own. I can only imagine how it felt for Bette and her peers; they had to do their own hairstyles and pick out their own outfits before stepping out into the spotlight. What a difference from the glam squads and professional stylists we have now!

I once shared an experience with the legendary Bette Davis, who took issue with my low-key presence at an event we both attended. This occurred back in 1986, shortly after I had given birth to my daughter. To my surprise, Davis was displeased that I didn’t adhere to the dress code.

Reflections on past events

It was surprising to Midler that the actress had engaged deeply in conversation with Bob Dylan throughout the evening, as she found it difficult to imagine what they could have been discussing. This was particularly intriguing given their history – they had once collaborated on a duet of “Buckets of Rain” for Midler’s album back in 1976.

Midler acknowledged the resemblance between herself and Bette Davis, despite their differently pronounced names. She felt a deep connection to Davis, despite the difference in pronunciation – Midler using “Bet” and Davis preferring “Betty.” In a later conversation, Hoda Kotb questioned if Midler’s mother had lived to witness her success, much like Bette Davis’ iconic status.

A Broadway actress appears alongside Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally, and Sheryl Lee Ralph in the July 26 premiere of “The Fabulous Four.” This comedy follows the story of three long-time friends who unexpectedly become bridesmaids at their former college friend Marilyn’s wedding in Key West, Florida.
