Best Movies of 2024 From The Bikeriders To A Different Man

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours in darkened theaters and late nights binge-watching films, I can confidently say that 2024 was a phenomenal year for cinema. The movies released this year not only showcased exceptional storytelling but also pushed boundaries, tackled complex themes, and left a lasting impact on audiences.

Every year brings forth a long list of brilliant ideas that turn into one of the most appreciated forms of entertainment, movies. Visiting theaters is always like stepping into a dream, watching tales in action, a feeling of our granny’s voice and our imagination letting us enter into a whole new world. Well, 2024 was no different than the other. The year brought us every aspect of cinema, from drama to action, from the stories that are true to the fictitious imaginations. Meanwhile, there were also outings that hit us right into the brain. 

Without a doubt it is tough to sum up the 12 months of awesomeness in one list, however, we have come up with 10 best films that were released this year.

1. The Bikeriders

If you’re looking for an experience that captures the thrill of creating music with your heartbeat, The Bikeirders is the film for you. This movie tells the story of a true motorcycle gang from the 20th century – a band of rebels who dominated their time and kept expanding.

Drawing inspiration from Danny Lyon’s photographic book featuring black-and-white Midwestern biker portraits, “The Bikeriders” boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Joining Tom Hardy in his town exploits is Austin Butler. The duo portrays the inseparable friends Johnny and Benny, as tight as brothers. Additionally, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Mike Faist, Michael Shannon, Boyd Holdbrook, and other talented actors are part of this feature. Guiding the narrative is Jeff Nichols’ direction.

2. Dune: Part Two

Step into the universe of the desert planet Arrakis, shrouded in enigma and on the brink of conflict. The upcoming film Dune: Part Two serves as a continuation of the 2021 blockbuster, following the storyline from the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, also called Dune. This cinematic masterpiece, expertly directed by Dennis Villeneuve, unfolds the second half of the tale, delving into political intrigue, the resurfacing of an ancient power, and a faction that finds renewed hope with their leader emerging as a young man.

The upcoming film features Timothée Chalamet playing Paul Atreides, Zendaya as warrior Chani, and Florence Pugh portraying Princess Irulan. Additionally, the movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Austin Butler, Lea Seydoux, Javier Bardem, Christopher Walken, Stellan Skarsgård, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, and many others.

3. His Three Daughters

In a way, this film serves as an emotional farewell. Directed by Azazel Jacobs, “His Three Daughters” is skillfully crafted into a work of art. It beautifully intertwines the lives of three sisters, each with unique personalities, as they care for their ailing father. The movie maintains a gripping tension on the screen through its powerfully depicted family moments.

In this film, there are instances where family dynamics become complex, with internal conflicts resembling small-scale wars within their household. Despite these complications, they all manage to find common ground by sharing a toast with a glass of wine at the end of the day. Starring Carrie Coon as a sister who subtly exerts control, the movie also features Natasha Lyonne, portraying a character who has been frustrated from caring for their father for several years, and is also a stoner. Completing the trio is Elizabeth Olsen, who yearns for family unity above all else.

4. Inside Out 2

A movie in which you can clearly follow the storyline and understand your own thoughts. The sequel to the widely praised Inside Out, titled Inside Out 2, brings audiences face-to-face with emotions that we have all experienced during our teenage years. In the original film from 2015, viewers went on exciting journeys with Joy, Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Sadness. This time around, the movie delves deeper into emotions such as Envy, Boredom, and even Anxiety.

Following the thrilling events of the initial Inside Out storyline, we find Riley Anderson adjusting to a fresh chapter at thirteen years old.

5. Anora

In an atypical love tale, Anora discusses a pair where the man is the son of a Russian tycoon, boasting immense wealth. Contrastingly, the woman is an ordinary dancer hailing from Brooklyn. As they embark on a fresh chapter, the past of the wealthy man intrudes upon their peaceful existence.

The film brings forth the talents of Mikey Madison and Mark Edelshteyn, as director Sean Baker captures the story in the most perfect way. Since the film is directed by The Florida Project’s filmmaker,  there is no doubt that the class structure was shot perfectly.

6. Kinds of Kindness

Following its spectacular success at the box office and leaving spectators speechless at the Oscars, the same talented cast reunites for “Kinds of Kindness.” In this film by Yorgos Lanthimos, we encounter numerous stories that delve into complex emotions, life’s mysteries, and topics beyond everyday comprehension.

Intriguingly, this film maintains your interest through the enigma surrounding a police officer’s vanished spouse, who mysteriously reappears but seems transformed from her former self. This movie can be described as a compelling exploration across three acts, delving into themes of control, fixation, and the unraveling of secrets.

7. The Room Next Door

This piece originates from the esteemed filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, which means it’s a bold, unflinching narrative. Featuring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, the story revolves around a heartfelt agreement between them as one character battles cancer.

This tale leads you on an emotional journey, at times filling you with joy and hope, while other moments provoke deep contemplation about mortality. “The Room Next Door” delves into themes like inheritance, destiny, and much more.

8. The Substance 

Regarding the leading trio of films on our roster, “The Substance” features Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley in prominent roles. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, this production offers an exceptionally insightful exploration of the subject matter surrounding body dysmorphia.

This particular piece is crucial for today’s era. It offers an intimate portrayal of fame, followed by a stark reminder of its fleeting nature. The film, “The Substance,” delves into the emotional aspect that may provoke discomfort when contrasted with real-life situations. Simultaneously, it instills fear about the dangers of losing self-control and detaching from reality, emphasizing potential repercussions that could be unimaginably harmful.

9. A Different Man 

Originating from the creative genius of Aaron Schimberg, A Different Man is a thought-provoking dark comedy that will leave you scratching your head. This intriguing story revolves around an ambitious actor who undergoes a medical procedure resulting in a dramatic change in his appearance. However, the narrative delves deeply into the cautionary tale of beware what you ask for.

While they share some similarities with The Substance’s depiction, each of these works offers its unique advantages. For instance, A Different Man boasts a star-studded cast including Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, and Adam Pearson.

 

10. The Brutalist 

As we near the conclusion of my list, there’s no denying that The Brutalist is the one I’m most captivated by. This masterpiece is the brainchild of director Brady Corbet, and it tells an enthralling tale like no other. It revolves around the character of Lázsló Tóth, a Hungarian architect, brilliantly portrayed by Adrien Brody. He finds himself in America during the twilight of World War II, a journey I can’t wait to follow!

He soon finds a new life working for Guy Pearce’s rich industrialist and experiences the American Dream. Well, in a way.
