Ben Stiller Slams Trump’s White House for Using ‘Tropic Thunder’ Clip: ‘War Is Not a Movie’

Ben Stiller spoke out against the Trump White House after they used a clip from his 2008 movie, Tropic Thunder, in a social media post supporting war. The post featured a collection of scenes from films like Braveheart, Top Gun, Superman, Transformers, Iron Man 2, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with the slogan “Justice the American way.”

Ben Stiller, who played Tugg Speedman in the movie Tropic Thunder, publicly asked the White House to take down a clip they used. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) that they never authorized the use of the footage and don’t want to be involved in what he sees as the administration’s messaging. Stiller emphasized that real war is very different from a movie.

We’re asking the White House to take down the clip from Tropic Thunder. We didn’t authorize its use and don’t want to be associated with any political messaging. Real war is a serious issue, not entertainment.

This isn’t the first time the Trump White House has used copyrighted films or music without getting permission for promotional purposes. Last year, a song by Sabrina Carpenter, “Juno,” was featured in a post showing ICE raids. In November, a video praising Trump also included a song by Taylor Swift, “The Fate of Ophelia,” even though Trump had previously criticized her online. Swift didn’t make any public statements about her music being used.

In October, musician Kenny Loggins publicly objected to the White House using his song “Danger Zone” from Top Gun in a video featuring Donald Trump flying over protestors. Loggins stated that the use of his song was without his permission, which he would not have granted, and he asked for it to be removed from the video immediately.

Ben Stiller has joined a growing number of artists and actors who are objecting to the use of their work in political ads without their permission.
