Ben Schwartz, the voice behind Sonic from the hit ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie franchise, has shown excitement about a possible ‘Super Smash Bros.’ film. In a chat with Variety, he praised Chris Pratt’s depiction of Mario and the concept of uniting different video game characters on the big screen.
Schwartz hinted that while a collaboration between Sonic and Mario at the Olympics would be fun, he imagines something even more exciting – possibly a new version of “Super Smash Bros.” He added, “I think it could be really exciting if we manage to create a spin-off!” However, he admitted that this idea comes with difficulties, as it would necessitate cooperation among several game studios.
The actor emphasized his enthusiasm for expanding the Sonic series, saying, “What excites me is the prospect of creating our own series that stands independently… that’s what I’m focusing on, and it’s what I truly enjoy.” Additionally, he showed interest in delving deeper into the Sonic universe by introducing new characters and stories in potential future installments.
The triumph of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ in 2022 and the favorable reviews for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ prove that audiences enjoy films based on video games. However, creating a ‘Super Smash Bros.’ movie could encounter numerous logistical challenges. Different studios own the rights to different characters: Warner Bros. owns Pokémon, Universal has Mario, and Sony is developing a live-action ‘Legend of Zelda’ movie. Coordinating among these studios would be difficult.
As a die-hard gamer, I’m keeping my fingers crossed! With movies like ‘Detective Pikachu’ already in our cinemas and the upcoming ‘Legend of Zelda’ on the horizon, it seems a crossover is starting to look like a real possibility. If these rival studios could somehow collaborate on one project, divide the profits, and bring my favorite gaming worlds to life on the big screen, that would be nothing short of amazing!
For gaming fanatics, the idea of a ‘Super Smash Bros.’ movie is thrilling. However, such a project would demand unparalleled cooperation within the film industry. At present, Schwartz and the team behind the Sonic films are concentrating on building their own series, aiming to introduce fresh characters and plotlines in subsequent episodes.
