Ben McKenzie is going after crypto again, only this time he’s doing it on the big screen.
A new trailer is out for McKenzie’s documentary, Everyone Is Lying to You for Money. The film explores the world of cryptocurrency, with McKenzie investigating what he believes is an industry fueled by exaggeration, false information, risky bets, and outright scams.
The film hits select theaters on April 17. Watch the trailer below.
Ben McKenzie takes aim at crypto
Ben McKenzie, the actor known for his roles in shows like The O.C. and Gotham, and who also studied Economics, has been a vocal critic of cryptocurrency in Hollywood for several years.
The documentary builds on ideas presented in the author’s 2023 book, Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, which claimed that a large portion of the cryptocurrency world is either poorly regulated or intentionally fraudulent.
The trailer makes its point fast.
McKenzie bluntly calls cryptocurrency “pretty stupid” at the beginning of the video. The footage then shifts to show celebrities promoting it, interviews with people in the crypto world, discussions in the Senate, stories from people who were scammed, and the dramatic failures of major crypto companies.
The documentary explores the rise of cryptocurrency, showing how it was heavily promoted and how crucial warnings about its risks were overlooked, downplayed, or kept secret from the public.

The trailer goes after the entire culture around crypto
What’s striking is that McKenzie isn’t just going after Bitcoin or a single individual. The preview paints the entire cryptocurrency world as a system driven by faith, marketing, celebrity endorsements, and quick profits.
The documentary also explores the wider consequences of the crash, featuring interviews with people who lost money to scams. McKenzie repeatedly calls the cryptocurrency industry a massive Ponzi scheme, a claim he’s made before, including in Senate testimony previewed in the trailer.
The trailer also features a quick appearance by Gerard Butler, delivering a memorable line perfect for sharing online: “I made a ton of money on it. But I don’t actually know anything about it.”
