Ben Affleck Joins Forces with Netflix Through AI Filmmaking Start-Up Acquisition

Netflix has bought InterPositive, a Los Angeles startup created by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck. InterPositive develops AI tools to assist with film editing and other post-production tasks. The financial details of the acquisition haven’t been revealed. All 16 members of the InterPositive team will join Netflix, and Ben Affleck will serve as a senior advisor to the company.

InterPositive’s AI technology is different from many others – it doesn’t create films from the ground up. Instead, it works with footage that already exists, helping filmmakers with tasks like color adjustments, lighting improvements, visual effects, and ensuring a consistent look throughout the film. As Ben Affleck explained in a Netflix video, this AI isn’t about simply typing a request and getting a finished movie; it’s about enhancing existing work.

In 2022, Ben Affleck launched InterPositive after seeing the potential of AI in filmmaking. His goal was to create technology that helps tell stories, but doesn’t take over the crucial creative and decision-making roles that require human experience and intuition. As he explained, “It’s important to keep storytelling human, relying on the kind of judgment that comes from years of experience – something only people can provide.”

Netflix believes InterPositive will empower filmmakers with greater creative freedom and safeguard their artistic intentions. According to Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s head of content, the technology offers “more choices, more control, and more protection for their vision.” Elizabeth Stone, who leads product and technology at Netflix, emphasized that these tools are designed to support filmmakers, not to accelerate production or reduce expenses.

This purchase follows Netflix’s decision to withdraw from negotiations to buy studios and streaming services from Warner Bros. Discovery. Ben Affleck’s AI technology will be used internally by Netflix and shared with its creative collaborators, but it won’t be available for sale to the general public.

Affleck explained that the InterPositive system aims to realistically reflect the filmmaking process. He stated, “My goal was to create a system that understands what actually happens on a film set, using terms that directors and cinematographers are already familiar with.” The AI is designed to solve common production issues while still respecting the director’s vision and ensuring a consistent look and feel.

Netflix is adding the InterPositive team and their technology to its services, giving filmmakers access to AI tools designed to boost, not replace, their creative work. According to Affleck, he’s looking forward to continuing development of the technology at Netflix and making it available to more creators.
