June Lockhart, a well-loved actress famous for playing roles in the classic TV shows Lassie and Lost in Space during the 1950s and 60s, has passed away at the age of 100.
The Emmy-nominated actress died peacefully of natural causes on October 23rd in Santa Monica, California, according to her family.
Throughout a career that spanned almost eighty years, Loretta Lockhart established herself as a long-lasting and beloved figure in Hollywood.
June Lockhart first became well-known for her role as the warm and nurturing mother, Ruth Martin, on the classic TV show Lassie, making her a familiar face to audiences. She later became equally recognized for playing Dr. Maureen Robinson in the science fiction series Lost in Space (1965-1968), where she portrayed a resourceful and loving mother trying to keep her family together while stranded in space.
I always look back so fondly on my time working on both shows. It wasn’t just about the work, you know? When we weren’t filming Lassie, I’d get completely hooked on Scrabble with my hairdresser and the rest of the crew – we had such a great time together on set. It really felt like a little family.
She shared that Lost in Space was still her most beloved project, explaining, “It was delightfully over-the-top, and I really cherished the bond I had with the cast and crew.”
Throughout her impressive career, Lockhart received many awards and accolades. She was nominated for two Emmys, including one for Best Actress for her role in Lassie. She also has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – one for her work in movies and another for television. Early on, in 1948, she won a Special Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway play For Love or Money, demonstrating her talent from the very beginning.
A private memorial service will be held to remember her. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Actors Fund, ProPublica, or International Hearing Dog, Inc.
The death of June Lockhart signals the end of a beloved chapter in television history. She brought a genuine warmth, intelligence, and captivating charm to her roles, making her characters truly memorable.
