Bella Ramsey openly discussed her experiences with autism and challenging scenes while filming the second season of The Last of Us, revealing how these difficulties often came close to overwhelming her, especially given her status as an autistic performer.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ramsey opened up about the tough physical and emotional challenges they faced while working on a well-known HBO series alongside Pedro Pascal. Filming often took place in frigid and challenging outdoor settings, making it difficult for the young 21-year-old actor to deal with wet, cold, and unruly conditions regularly.

Speaking about a challenging situation, Ramsey mentioned that he had to don waterproof garments beneath his costume, which was quite unbearable. He humorously joked about it on set or else he feared losing his sanity. They would joke and say, “I’m fine-tuning,” as a light-hearted reference to their predicament.

Wearing waterproof gear beneath their costumes added an extra burden of discomfort, as Ramsey explained, making it more challenging for them to handle the work environment on set. Many of these environmental pressures exacerbated their heightened sensory sensitivity, a condition that many autistic individuals can relate to.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d share that back in March 2024, during the filming of The Last of Us, I personally stepped forward to openly discuss my ‘neurodivergence’ and unveil my autism diagnosis to the world.

Ramsey added that fatigue intensified their autistic symptoms, making sensations more pronounced as the work carried on for several months. They emphasized, “For me, being tired has always increased my autistic tendencies. This became quite challenging as time passed.

Ramsey confessed to experiencing a need to stay optimistic and find distractions while filming. At times, the discomfort became too intense for them, and during meal breaks, they felt compelled to take off some of their garments just to cope with it.

For several years, they had a feeling they might be neurodivergent. However, a chat with a teammate who recognized the typical signs sparked their decision to undergo an official evaluation.

Following the diagnosis, Bella Ramsey expressed feeling more self-embracing and insightful about their own identity.
