Bella Ramsey, renowned for their role in HBO’s “The Last of Us,” has voiced opinions regarding gender classifications at the Emmy Awards. Although they identify as non-binary and prefer to be referred to using they/them pronouns, Ramsey is comfortable being categorized within the Lead Actress section.
On The Louis Theroux Podcast available on Spotify, Ramsey expressed that they are comfortable with any way people choose to address them.
“Call me how you see me,” they said.
Ramsey recognizes that finding straightforward solutions for gendered award classifications can be challenging. Nevertheless, they strongly advocate for the ongoing acknowledgment and recognition of women within their profession.
Ramsey admitted, ‘I’m stumped for a solution and I can only wish there was an effortless workaround,’ but emphasized, ‘I strongly believe in having separate categories for women and men.’
There’s been widespread acclaim for Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie in The Last of Us, with some predicting they could be nominated for an Emmy this year. The debate about acting categories based on gender has been a hot topic in Hollywood, as more and more non-binary actors are making their mark.
