Notable figures from Hollywood are banding together to advocate for transgender rights in light of a recent UK Supreme Court decision. Among these celebrities, Bella Ramsey – best known for her role in The Last of Us – who identifies as non-binary, is one of many prominent names that have added their signatures to an open letter, urging the industry to take action in support of transgender rights.
Actors such as Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton, Paapa Essiedu of The Outrun, Harris Dickinson known for Babygirl, and filmmaker Molly Manning Walker of How to Have Sex have added their names to the petition, joining over 400 other professionals in the industry.
In an unfortunate turn of events on April 17, a court decision was made, denying legal recognition of transgender women as women within our nation’s borders. This decision has ignited a wave of indignation, causing prominent figures, advocates, and many others to voice their disapproval vocally. As a committed supporter, I too stand in solidarity with the transgender community, expressing my dismay over this ruling and calling for change.
The letter was started by Sid Strickland, a development producer at Motive Pictures, and Jack Casey, a script editor. Its purpose is to show support for marginalized groups, including transgender, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ individuals, who are affected by this decision.
The letter underscores that the decision may adversely impact trans individuals across various sectors of the industry, including film sets and cinemas. It might also result in denying access to numerous single-sex establishments for this community.
The letter encourages cultural entities like Bectu, BAFTA, BFI, Directors UK, Picturehouse, BBC, the Writers’ Guild, and Channel 4 to express solidarity with trans individuals. It also requests enhanced safeguards for the community within the industry and these organizations.
In a statement, a group of movie and TV industry experts express their unity and support for the transgender, non-binary, and intersex communities, who have faced consequences as a result of the Supreme Court decision made on April 17th. (Deadline reports this).
The endorsers aim to lend their support to the over 2,000 individuals who have previously signed the petition, and they invite fellow professionals in the industry and cultural establishments to do the same.
The letter further clarifies that categorizing women strictly based on biological sex can invalidate their everyday experiences and jeopardize the safety of individuals who identify as women, regardless of their initial designation at birth.
