Bella Ramsey Calls Autism Diagnosis ‘Liberating’ After The Last of Us Crew Member Recognized Signs

Bella Ramsey, recognized for her role as Ellie in The Last of Us, recently revealed that they received an autism diagnosis during the filming of the HBO series’ first season. In an interview with British Vogue published on March 19, the actor expressed that this diagnosis marked a significant phase of self-understanding.

Ramsey shared they were diagnosed with autism during filming for The Last of Us’s first season. They found out about their diagnosis empowering and liberating, expressing, ‘This knowledge allows me to move through life more gently towards myself, understanding that tasks others find effortless might be challenging for me.’

Bella Ramsey had often thought she might have traits associated with being on the autism spectrum, as she frequently felt different and isolated during her childhood years. It was actually a colleague from The Last of Us TV show who initially suggested this idea to her.

Based on Ramsey’s account, a team member, who has an autistic child, observed shared characteristics between them and proposed the possibility that they could also have autism.

Following this realization, I felt compelled to undergo a thorough psychiatric evaluation, which ultimately validated my autism diagnosis. I openly acknowledged and embraced my identity as an individual on the autism spectrum, choosing not to conceal it.

Ramsey shared insights about how being autistic has shaped their acting career. They explained that manually learning social interactions has proven beneficial in their profession, as they’ve spent much time observing and learning from others. This careful process of consciously deciphering social dynamics has significantly aided them in their acting endeavors.

Furthermore, they mentioned they have sensory concerns, specifically an enhanced perception of subtle facial expressions and body language from others. This sensitivity can be difficult yet advantageous for them in their line of work.

Ramsey pointed out that focusing on a routine or structured work environment may significantly organize their daily existence, offering particular advantages for those with autism.

It was mentioned that having a fixed call time along with guidelines about attire, posture, positioning, and meal choices contributes to a feeling of direction and structure. Notably, Ramsey will be reprising their character as Ellie in The Last of Us Season 2, airing on April 13 on HBO.
