What is a Lightsaber, Really?
Okay, let’s talk lightsabers. As a movie critic, I spend a lot of time thinking about how cool they look, but a new video really got me thinking about how utterly horrifying it would be to actually be hit by one. Forget everything you think you know – these aren’t just glowing swords. We’re talking about a contained blade of plasma that’s almost four times hotter than the sun. Seriously, around 20,000 degrees Celsius! The sun’s surface? Only 5,500. So, if one of these things sliced through you? Let’s just say it wouldn’t be a minor injury. It would be… catastrophic, to put it mildly.
What Would Actually Happen if a Lightsaber Were to Stab You (Because physics says so…)
It’s pretty unbelievable how many characters survive lightsaber injuries in Star Wars. Finn, Kylo Ren, Anakin, and even Darth Maul – who was bisected! – all live through what should be fatal wounds. Han Solo even manages to survive with a lightsaber sticking out of him for a full fifteen seconds! If you think about what actually happens when something is cut with a lightsaber, based on real-world physics, it’s clear no one should walk away. Here’s the thing: a normal stab wound causes a cut and bleeding. But lightsabers don’t just cut – they burn right through things.
Imagine being struck by a lightsaber. Instead of a wound, the intense heat would instantly vaporize your insides – your tissues, bones, and organs – leaving smoke and a burning smell. This all happens incredibly fast, in about half a second, before you could even register any pain. Within another second or two, your heart would stop, your lungs would fail, and your body would shut down, resulting in immediate death. It’s a gruesome thought, and rightfully so – it would be a truly horrific experience.
It’s funny, we actually covered this idea way back on TopMob eight years ago! Longtime viewers might recall a fun series we did called Because Science w/ Kyle Hill. The video below brings up similar scary details, but Kyle takes it a step further. He points out that a lightsaber is so incredibly hot, touching one could literally cause your body to explode—similar to what happens when you throw a water bottle into boiling water.
(Go watch Kyle’s channel, by the way!)
Why Death by Lightsaber Would Be Much Worse in Real Life
Lightsabers are supposed to be incredibly powerful weapons, so why do so many Jedi survive getting hit by them? It just doesn’t make sense – is it because of plot convenience, the Force, or just made-up sci-fi logic? Whatever the reason in the movies, let’s think about it scientifically. If a lightsaber really could cut through anything, being struck by one would be instantly devastating. You’d either be burned to ash from the inside out or simply explode. Suddenly, owning a lightsaber doesn’t sound so cool, does it? Sorry to burst your bubble.
