Beetlejuice Star Winona Ryder Never Thought Her Character Lydia Deetz Will Be A Mom In Sequel; ‘Keep The Essence Of First One’

As a die-hard fan who has grown up with Winona Ryder and her iconic roles, it is beyond exciting to see her reprising her role as Lydia Deetz in the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel! After all these years, it feels like coming home to watch these characters we love evolve.

Winona Ryder recently shared insights on her anticipation to reprise her legendary role as Lydia Deetz in Tim Burton’s forthcoming Beetlejuice sequel. She will reunite with her co-star, Michael Keaton, who is set to reprise his iconic character. Ryder, the original goth teen who interacted with the supernatural residents of her house back in the 1988 film, hinted at intriguing developments regarding the matured version of her character and what enthusiasts might look forward to in this sequel.

Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara recently chatted with Entertainment Weekly about their reunion with director Tim Burton for his upcoming sequel to his classic 1988 movie. Ryder also talked about her early assumptions for her gothic teen character’s future, as well as her feelings towards the adult version of Lydia.

Initially, Ryder shared her thoughts, saying, “I’d like to maintain the core of the original, yet envision an entirely new journey based on what has transpired,” and later admitted that she hadn’t anticipated Lydia taking on the role of a “mother.”

In an interesting twist, the actress from The Black Swan suggested that Lydia might decide to remain a “single woman” in the attic instead. She playfully hinted that having Jenna Ortega on board would answer several lingering questions, and it seemed fitting to her.

The Beetlejuice sequel brings back the Deetz family, who return to their home in Winter River after Charles Deetz’s unexpected death. Lydia’s life changes drastically when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), finds a mysterious model of the town in the attic. Accidentally opening a portal to the Afterlife, they release Betelgeuse (Keaton).

The actress mentioned that prior to their movie collaboration, they would meet occasionally, and Burton often expressed, “This isn’t a follow-up. It’s more like real life, and I’m genuinely curious about what has transpired with them [characters] since then.”

In an interview, Catherine O’Hara (her co-star) mentioned that she observed Tim Burton’s recent discussions about Lydia’s narrative in the sequel. She also noted that she had watched various interviews where he talked about this character’s development and compared it to the original Beetlejuice film. O’Hara further stated that Burton seems especially fascinated by the relationships within the Deetz family, specifically the connection between the three female characters.

In the meantime, the much-awaited film “Beetlejuice” directed by Tim Burton is scheduled to hit the big screens on September 6, 2024.
