Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Tim Burton Reveals Why He Excluded Key Original Cast Members Alec Baldwin & Geena Davis From Sequel

As a long-time fan of Tim Burton’s whimsical and macabre creations, I find myself both intrigued and a little saddened by his decision to exclude Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis from the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel. Having grown up watching their hilarious performances in the original 1988 film, it’s bittersweet to see them step aside for this new generation of characters.

Recently, Tim Burton spoke about the absence of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis in his upcoming sequel to Beetlejuice citing a focus on generational dynamics with brand-new characters. The cast of the 2024 film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, includes the original cast Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Michael Keaton, but Baldwin and Davis who had major parts in the first film do not return. The film also features Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz and Monica Bellucci as Delores.

The Corpse Bride’s director explained that his choice wasn’t about rehashing the past or featuring every recurring character from the initial movie. Although Baldwin and Davis were pivotal figures in the original Beetlejuice, the director’s vision for the sequel veered sharply in a different direction. Instead, he has chosen to center on a fresh narrative, introducing new characters and their unique dynamics.

According to Burton, he chose not to simply fulfill any requirements. Despite their significant role in the initial film, he was concentrating on a different aspect instead.

In the 1988 movie, Baldwin and Davis portrayed Adam and Barbara Maitland, a pair who had recently passed away and were tied to their home. However, Burton’s retelling shifts focus to Jenna Ortega’s character, who inadvertently opens a door leading to the underworld, causing quite the shockwave.

“The movie storyline reveals that following a sudden family calamity, the Deetz clan returns to their house in Winter River. However, they’re not alone as Beetlejuice continues to linger. Trouble ensues when Lydia’s rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, finds an enigmatic town model hidden in the attic, and unwittingly opens a gateway to the spirit world.”

In terms of planning, it’s crucial to consider when and where a sequel fits within a single generation. As reported by the source, what particularly captivated Burton was the bond between a mother and daughter, as well as a grandmother and granddaughter. He saw this connection as the “core” or “heart” of his upcoming film.

Instead of strictly replicating the original film’s formula, Tim Burton felt it was crucial to focus on relationships spanning generations, a concept he believes he can effectively portray now, rather than at the time of the initial movie’s release.
