As a lifestyle expert reflecting on Winona Ryder‘s career journey, I am deeply impressed by her resilience and the influence of her family values throughout her life. Her parents’ decision to drive from San Francisco for auditions instead of moving to Los Angeles is a testament to their commitment to maintaining a sense of normalcy in their daughter’s life amidst the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.
As a lifestyle expert looking back on my own journey in Hollywood, I can’t help but appreciate the careful measures my parents took to shield me during my early days as a child actor. Unlike many other families who moved lock, stock, and barrel to LA, mine opted for a more balanced approach – we commuted from our home in San Francisco whenever I had an audition in Los Angeles. This wise decision allowed us to maintain some semblance of normalcy while still pursuing my dreams in the entertainment industry. Keep reading for more insightful tidbits!
In an interview for AnOther Magazine, Winona Ryder reminisced about the start of her acting career and the new dark fantasy-comedy-horror movie titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice that she’s part of. During this open discussion with the magazine, Ryder also brought up why her parents declined to move to Los Angeles. She explained that school was highly valued in her household, so she had to maintain good grades in order to participate in auditions at age 13.
The actress who played in The Haunted Mansion shared that she couldn’t work if it clashed with school, because her parents, whom she regards as her closest friends, were cautious about Hollywood. They saw the industry as akin to the tragedy of Judy Garland and our family never moved there.
Ryder described it as a “blessing,” detailing that she’d encountered numerous children who relocated there to help their families, but their situations didn’t improve favorably. Instead, many of these children faced exhaustion and burnout.
The actress further mentioned that she later had heard that she got a reputation for being very “choosy,” with projects noting, but the truth was that her family couldn’t afford to go for all the auditions.
Yet, upon encountering her 1988 movie Beetlejuice, she felt a strong affinity, pointing out that this film captivated her due to its intriguing script, as it stood out significantly from the other roles she had been previously offered. She candidly confessed, “Beetlejuice was so unique – I found myself drawn to Lydia.”
In another phrase, Natalie Portman said she asked her mom to wait in the car before her film audition since she preferred going through it on her own. Later, she remembered waiting in a secluded office at the Culver City studio, where she struck up a conversation with a young man who she believed was from the art department, discussing classic films and the artwork of Edward Gorey.
She mentioned that she inquired as to when director Burton would arrive, only to discover later on that it was him all along. She commented, “I never realized directors could be so relaxed and youthful. I asked if I should read instead, to which he replied, ‘No, I want you to perform it.'”
After many years, Winona Ryder and Tim Burton have come together once more for the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel. Ryder is back as the cherished character Lydia Deetz, joining her fellow actor Michael Keaton in this eagerly awaited follow-up movie.
