‘Because I Was Portraying a…’: Demi Moore Reveals She Felt Judged For Playing THIS Iconic 1996 Role

As a dedicated fan, I wholeheartedly admire Demi Moore for her unwavering commitment to challenging societal norms and breaking barriers through her acting choices. Her roles in Striptease and G.I. Jane not only showcased her remarkable talent but also sparked conversations about gender equality that are still relevant today.

Demi Moore is pondering over the backlash she faced following her portrayal of a stripper in the movie Striptease (1996). In this film, Moore’s character was a single mother who resorted to stripping as a means to accumulate sufficient funds to fight for her daughter’s custody

Taling to Variety about her role in the film she said, “Take Striptease: There was an interesting kind of judgment placed on a woman who worked as a dancer, but the idea was that this was a woman trying to take care of her child in the best way she could.”

Moore went on discussing her role in the 1997 film G.I. Jane, “It seemed logical to me if a woman is able and determined to serve, shouldn’t she be given that opportunity? I couldn’t grasp why the path was blocked. Many of my films shared similar messages.”

The actress, who previously disclosed that a producer called her a “popcorn actress,” suggesting she lacked critical recognition, also remembered the intense examination she faced due to the two films and gossip surrounding her payment for those projects

Demi Moore expressed, “That instance carried immense meaning for me since it aimed to establish fairness for all women, not just myself. I felt misunderstood and judged for portraying a stripper, and similarly for playing a soldier. It seemed like I was letting down both women and men.”

Moore, who’s returning to the big screen with the body-horror film The Substance, was questioned about reprising her roles in Striptease and G.I. Jane if given another chance. The actress expressed, “Absolutely, I would. They provided me so much. In the end, that’s all I possess—my experiences.”

Demi Moore’s latest film, The Substance, rather than Striptease, deviates from the usual narrative by focusing on societal views of female bodies. In this movie, Moore portrays Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-popular star who, after losing her gig as a fitness show host, resorts to extreme measures to revamp her looks

Yet, events didn’t unfold as expected when she self-injects the title substance, aiming to transform into a more youthful and error-free version of herself

The Substance is slated to release in theaters on September 20.
