After the disappointing performance of the live-action Snow White, it seemed like Disney might stop making live-action versions of its classic animated films. However, Lilo & Stitch proved incredibly successful, showing Disney there was still a lot of profit to be made from revisiting its older stories. Beauty and the Beast (2017) was a huge hit, earning over a billion dollars. Now, Variety reports that Disney is planning another live-action project based on the 1991 animated film, this time focusing on the villain, Gaston. But Luke Evans, who previously played Gaston in the 2017 film, won’t be returning for this new project.
So, what’s the deal with this new spin-off? Reports say it’s going to be a fresh story with a new main character. We’ve seen a pattern in movies like Wicked and Maleficent – exploring the backstories of villains and explaining how they became that way. Even the Star Wars prequels did this. But is Gaston the right villain for this treatment? He does have a fantastic song, thanks to Howard Ashman and Alan Menken! However, he’s also a very unpleasant character – openly prejudiced and quick to incite violence against anyone who’s different. Making him the hero feels risky and potentially insensitive, especially now.
Let’s be honest, Gaston is incredibly attractive, and that’s a huge marketing advantage. Finding the right actor could really draw an audience. There’s also the possibility they could bring him back from the dead, like they left open in Beauty and the Beast, and explore a story about his redemption. Right now, though, it’s hard to get excited about a backstory focused on why he’s such a bully. Disney hasn’t announced a director or release date, so the project might never actually happen. We’ll just have to wait and see what they decide.
