As a hardcore gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent developments surrounding X-Men ’97 have left me utterly baffled and disheartened. Having grown up watching the original series, the reboot was a breath of fresh air that brought back fond memories. However, the sudden firing of Beau DeMayo, the show’s creator, ahead of its premiere is something that leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
1997’s X-Men adaptation proved to be a massive success for Marvel, despite the challenges faced during production and the deviations it made to the comic book series’ continuity. While we won’t delve into specific reasons for its success in this discussion, it’s worth noting that the animated series boasted an engaging narrative, maintained a visual aesthetic reminiscent of the original series, and stirred nostalgia among fans who had followed the original show.
It’s clear this update reveals why and how Disney opted to revive the series, but it’s important to note that the team behind Season 1 won’t be returning. The showrunner and original creator of the reboot, Beau DeMayo, was reportedly let go due to allegations of sexual misconduct and is currently involved in a public dispute with Disney.
In a recent Twitter conversation, Beau DeMayo shared that Disney’s changes for Season 2 will deviate significantly from his initial plans. Interestingly, despite the scripts already being pitched, Disney brought in new writers to rework DeMayo’s original drafts. All this while, DeMayo has been busy working on Season 3. This chat is filled with intriguing insights, so don’t stop reading!
In essence, Beau DeMayo revitalized the ’90s animated X-Men series, making it a success among fans. However, before its debut, allegations of inappropriate conduct led to his dismissal. Since then, DeMayo has been vocal about Disney, as the truth regarding these allegations never surfaced. For now, let’s concentrate on the show itself.
Essentially, it’s come to light that DeMayo penned all of Season 2 before his dismissal and was nearing completion of Season 3. Although Disney kept many of DeMayo’s concepts for Season 1, there are hints that the scripts for Season 2 underwent significant changes, and the series appears to be veering off in a new direction entirely. In a recent Twitter conversation with fans, DeMayo shared some of the alterations Disney will make that we can anticipate.
It appears that the director and executive who clashed with me over the comic-book faithful approach during season 1 have significantly altered or discarded many of my original plans 🤷♂️ Initially, there was an attempt to make Emma and Logan a romantic item 🙄

Indeed, both the enthusiastic team, including myself, grew enraged when a particular executive entered the scene. This individual had allowed me to write the script, only later to announce they were abandoning the project, claiming they “had lost interest” and I was being “overly ambitious.” This same executive who suggested less gay undertones in the script.

I’m afraid I must agree. When Marvel defends a director who appears to discriminate against those not similar to them, while dismissing Chris Claremont as an outdated white male whose works should not be adapted, and opting to create “our own interpretations” instead, it’s hardly surprising if such actions are met with criticism…

In 2022 and 2023, we completed writing Season 2. We were thoroughly scrutinizing animatics and sending off episodes. Since animation takes time to produce, it had a lengthy lead-time. I was submitting the script for Season 3 in March when we separated.

Although the tweets seem scattered, they contain valuable insights that will make for an exciting comparison during the second season. This is because it’s then that we can accurately assess and appreciate the differences and similarities.
