2024 was an unforgettable year when I witnessed BDX droids wandering Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland. Now, it seems these charming little robots are gearing up for a grand comeback and spreading their presence beyond Anaheim, California!
Disney has made an exciting announcement – BDX droids will soon be seen in Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Tokyo Disneyland! But that’s not all; they’re also stepping into the limelight for a live-action debut in The Mandalorian & Grogu movie.
With all this hard work in Hollywood and amusement parks, it’s only fair that BDX droids get some TLC. That’s where Auto the Anzellan comes in – he’ll be joining them at Disney parks as well!
In other words, it implies that everyone will be present when The Mandalorian and Grogu touch down at Smuggler’s Run in 2026.
This year at SXSW, I had the privilege of being part of an exciting discussion about Disney’s future world-building, where we unveiled some major news regarding “Star Wars” parks. In the not-so-distant future, you’ll be encountering BDX droids in the galaxy far, far away, whether it’s in person or on your screens!
Characterized as playful, inquisitive, and adorable, these vibrant two-legged robots are set to make an appearance in three Disney theme parks. Additionally, they will feature in Jon Favreau’s upcoming film, “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” Favreau himself was present in Austin to announce this exciting news.
BDX droids are just the kind of lively element Galaxy’s Edge could benefit from. Although it’s one of Disney’s finest themed-lands, the Star Wars area sometimes feels lacking in dynamic presence. Having these friendly robots roaming about will certainly inject more energy into the environment.
In addition to assisting at Galaxy’s Edge, a new animatronic based on a species debuted in The Rise of Skywalker (and later featured on The Mandalorian) will be joining the parks. This character is an Anzellan named Auto, who are particularly skilled at fixing malfunctioning BDX droids when they break down.
The auto won’t need to assist with an update for Smuggler’s Run until at least 2026. Moreover, Disney has confirmed that this is also when they plan to implement their previously announced retheme of the ride, featuring Din Djarin and Grogu. This change will take place on May 22, 2026, coinciding with the day these characters appear on the big screen. Additionally, there’s expected to be a connection between the two events.
Imagineer Asa Kalama stated that launching an attraction and a large-scale movie simultaneously wouldn’t be feasible without the bonds within Disney. He explained that Jon and Dave (Filoni) have entrusted us with their story, and as a team, we’ve collaborated to create a fresh objective for Smugglers Run that aligns with this plot.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but be thrilled about the future of Star Wars Land at Disney. Leaving the past behind, this Star Wars attraction is shaping up to surpass all expectations!
