Before the public test of Battlefield 6 began, a major discussion arose between players and the game creators about how classes should work. The question was whether to stick with the traditional system where each class has access to specific weapons, or to let players freely choose any weapon regardless of their class.
So, EA ran an open beta with both 64-player and 128-player playlists to see how people played. They looked at all the data, and the good news is Battlefield 6 is launching with both modes!
According to a recent EA blog post, data showed very little difference between the two playlist types. Class selection varied by only 2% at most, and the number of kills per hour was just slightly higher in Conquest and Breakthrough modes when the open system was active (0.2 and 0.1 respectively). Matches lasted about 3.75% longer with the closed system, and players were revived 2-3% more often in those matches compared to when the open system was used.
EA noted that no single weapon type was clearly favored by players. They observed consistently even usage rates across all weapon classes, indicating players experimented with a diverse range of options regardless of the game mode, and no one weapon felt overpowered.
It’s important to remember that the open beta might not accurately reflect how the game will play after it officially launches. Once players figure out the most effective strategies – which typically happens in shooter games – the gameplay could change significantly.
EA reported that most players preferred the new, open weapon system and continued using it. They believe this confirms they’re making the right decision for the future of Battlefield 6.
Since some players really liked the original class-based system, the developers chose to offer both that and the new system through different playlists.
EA also revealed the Season 1 roadmap for Battlefield 6 ahead of launch.
