In a new development, the Resident Evil series is being revamped, with director-writer Zach Cregger on board for a brand-new take. There’s a fierce competition between leading film studios like Warner Bros. and Netflix, as they engage in an intense bidding battle to secure the rights for this reboot.
Film director Cregger, recognized for his contribution to the chilling 2022 blockbuster Barbarian, has swiftly carved out a prominent position as a key figure in contemporary horror. His forthcoming venture, titled Weapons, is creating quite a stir and even sparked a competitive bidding process before landing at Warner Bros. The film, which stars Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, is described as an interconnected, multistory horror saga that revolves around the vanishing of high school students in a small town.
Who’s Behind The Resident Evil Reboot?
Beyond just working with Cregger, I’m thrilled to be part of the team bringing back the Resident Evil franchise. Constantin Film, a long-standing rights holder for this iconic series, and PlayStation Productions will produce the reboot. The talented Shay Hatten, whose work can be seen in films like ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ and ‘Army of the Dead’, is joining forces with me to pen the script.
Departure from previous films
It’s worth mentioning that this new installment signifies a shift from the six films previously featuring Milla Jovovich, as well as the 2021 film “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” and the recently failed Netflix series.
In contrast to the previous movies that combined elements of horror, science fiction, and action, it’s rumored that Cregger’s adaptation will reboot the series and focus on its horror origins, as the games are well-known for. This new version aims to be truer to the original Capcom video games in terms of horror content.
