Blade for PVE

Blade is a powerful attacker with exceptional offensive stats – she has the highest base attack in the game at 429 and a high 75% critical damage rate. All of her potential upgrades further increase her attack power. However, she’s very fragile, with one of the lowest base HP values in the game. This means she can deal massive damage, but requires defensive support to survive challenging endgame battles.

The Onsen Swordfighter Blade, when fully upgraded, deals 600% of your skill damage. This damage increases by an additional 120% for each debuff affecting the enemy. While 600% damage is decent, it’s a bit low compared to more recent, powerful options. To really maximize the Blade’s potential, you need to make sure your opponent has several debuffs applied.

Blade struggles to weaken enemies by herself. While she can make a single enemy vulnerable, she needs her teammates to apply additional debuffs to significantly increase her damage output.

Recommended teammates

Okay, so if you’re playing Blade, everyone says Celia is the best partner, and I totally agree. She’s already amazing at building up those long chain combos with her area-of-effect attacks. But what a lot of people don’t realize is she can also lower enemy attack and magic attack, and even reduce their defense and magic resistance a little – and you can upgrade that even further! It’s a really useful hidden part of her kit.

If you apply both Descendant Celia and Curse Celia to an enemy before using Onsen Blade, the enemy will have three of Celia’s debuffs. This significantly boosts Onsen Blade’s damage by 360% (on top of any extra damage gained from chain attacks).

Eleaneer is a strong teammate. Her Shadow Bunny form has a vulnerability skill that counts as a debuff, and as a B-Rank Idol, she can add two more debuffs – silence and reduced defense. Importantly, during fiend hunts, you don’t need to keep Shadow Bunny Eleaneer in your active team. Her buffs and debuffs will still affect enemies even after she’s been switched out, carrying over to the next team you send in.

With Shadow Bunny Eleaneer and both of Celia’s costumes, enemies can be hit by four area-of-effect debuffs. This significantly boosts Onsen Blade’s damage, increasing it to a very strong 1,080%.

Sonya works well with Blade, especially in guild raids. Her ability to weaken enemies to dark-type attacks complements Blade’s area-of-effect damage. However, outside of raids, they aren’t a perfect match. They use different types of attacks – physical versus magical – and Blade doesn’t build up attack chains quickly enough to fully utilize Sonya’s special Nightmare ability.

Rafina, Gray, and Rubia are all strong choices because they can apply several debuffs. Zenith is particularly effective when facing just one enemy.

Game modes

Blade isn’t very strong in typical player-versus-environment (PvE) fights. Other costumes generally deal more damage and have better area-of-effect attacks. Plus, enemies rarely weaken themselves, making Blade’s special ability less useful.

Blade really shines during Fiend Hunts and Guild Raids. Her Onsen Blade costume gives her a particularly powerful attack – it has the highest damage potential of any of her costumes. She’s especially effective against bosses that attack multiple times, allowing her Apostle Blade skill to maximize damage.

During guild raids, when an enemy is broken, it’s treated like a negative effect, which significantly increases the damage from Onsen Blade during those turns.

Blade does not work well in Last Night, since the Last Night boss can’t be debuffed.

Blade for PVP

Onsen Blade is not very good for Mirror Wars or Golden Colosseum.

In Mirror Wars, Onsen Blade’s extra damage isn’t consistent, and her area attacks and special ability cost aren’t particularly strong. In Golden Colosseum, she’s a basic attacker without any standout features, and her attacks being single hits makes her weak against enemies that can dodge.

Honestly, one of the biggest problems with Onsen Blade is how easily she gets taken down in PvP. She has super low HP, making her really fragile. A character can be powerful but fragile if they can knock out opponents on the very first turn, but Onsen Blade just can’t consistently do that, which makes her a tough pick.

Exclusive Gear

Like many characters, Blade gets a 45% attack boost from her special gear, which is a good bonus. However, she performs well even without it, so it’s really only worth getting if you’re aiming for a top score. Think of it as an optional upgrade, not a necessity.

Conclusion

The new Onsen Blade costume is a strong addition to the Blade character, becoming more powerful as enemies accumulate debuffs. When paired with allies like Celia and Eleaneer who apply debuffs, Onsen Blade can deal over 1,000% damage, and potentially even more with the right team and enemy. Thanks to her naturally high attack stats and powerful skills, Onsen Blade is currently the strongest dark damage dealer in the game when debuffs are effectively used.

She excels at taking on weaker demons and participating in guild raids. Guild raids are great because you can coordinate with teammates to weaken enemies, and the raid boss even weakens itself, creating opportunities for powerful attacks. However, she doesn’t perform as well in standard battles, and isn’t very strong in player-versus-player combat.

While not strictly required for Onsen Blade, having additional Blade costumes is highly recommended. Without them, you’ll likely spend a lot of turns waiting for cooldowns to end.
