Angelica for PVE
When Neon Savior Angelica was first released, players generally thought she was one of the weakest characters. This was because she used a lot of energy and her damage, which caused a slow burn over time, wasn’t very strong. It’s important to remember this was before the game allowed you to upgrade characters, before the challenging boss fights we have now, and before she received improvements to make her more balanced.
Currently, Neon Savior is seen as decent for taking down fiends, but it’s not a top-tier light attacker. Here’s a breakdown of why.
Angelica stands out because her costumes inflict damage based on a percentage of the enemy’s maximum HP. However, there’s a hidden cap: her damage calculations only consider up to 30,000 HP, even if the enemy has more. This applies to all of her skills that use max HP. You’ll notice this limitation in later story levels, as enemies start to exceed 30,000 HP. In the toughest content, like high-level fiends and guild raid bosses, enemies can have HP in the billions, meaning Angelica’s damage will be significantly reduced.
With a fully upgraded +5 potential, Neon Savior Angelica initially deals 5% of an enemy’s maximum HP as damage, followed by 37% of their maximum HP as burn damage each turn. This means against enemies with 30,000 HP or more, a +5 Neon Angelica will only deal 1,500 upfront damage and 11,100 burn damage per turn.
This damage is quite low when compared to other enemies that inflict damage over time. For instance, Rodev’s Star Liatris, with 2,500 attack power, deals an initial 5,625 damage (not including any chain reactions) and then 28,125 burn damage each turn.
Okay, so playing Angelica, I’ve noticed a pretty big downside. Damage based on her HP doesn’t get boosted by my Magic Attack buffs, which is a bummer. When you get to the really tough parts of the game, stacking all kinds of buffs is super important for dealing serious damage. Because Angelica can’t benefit from those M.ATK boosts, it really holds her back compared to other powerful light attackers when it comes to endgame content. It makes her less flexible and harder to maximize.
Angelica can be helpful in longer, level 10 or higher dark fiend battles when used on your third team. While she isn’t as strong as other magic damage dealers, her damage adds up over extended fights. Because you’ve likely already used your best magic attack boosters on your main two teams, Angelica’s lower stats might not matter as much on your third team if you don’t have strong boosters available anyway.
Angelica, the Neon Savior, isn’t very useful outside of specific enemy hunts. She’s not a strong enough attacker to be relied on in guild raids, and in most regular battles, you’ll want to defeat enemies quickly. Her damage style – dealing small amounts of damage over time – doesn’t really fit this fast-paced approach, meaning she rarely gets a chance to shine.
Angelica for PVP
Neon Savior isn’t a good choice for player-versus-player (PVP) battles. PVP often comes down to quick wins, with most matches decided in the first couple of turns. Neon Savior’s damage takes too long to ramp up, and because her attacks are based on an opponent’s health, she rarely deals a finishing blow.
While the 75% damage reduction is helpful, and Angelica is fairly durable, she shouldn’t be relied upon as a main tank. Damage reduction abilities can be easily countered by abilities that remove buffs, and Justia is also a common opponent in player-versus-player combat.
Angelica’s exclusive weapon
Angelica has a special weapon that significantly boosts her critical hit damage by 90%. However, it’s generally considered a non-essential item, and most players shouldn’t prioritize obtaining it. Angelica isn’t one of the strongest damage dealers in the game, so investing heavily in maximizing her damage isn’t recommended.
Conclusion
Neon Savior isn’t one of the strongest attackers. While her damage over time can be useful against fiends, she struggles in most other situations.
Pull one for the Fated Guest interaction, but otherwise the recommendation is to skip.
