+ Unique mechanic, with the power to reach very high damage
+ Strong offensive stats (base M.ATK is 407)
+ A staple for dark teams, great synergy with Shadowed Dream Sonya
+ May become stronger in the future if new high-chain dark attackers are released
Right now, there aren’t many ways to create high-performing teams, but that may change soon.
- Sonya’s high damage AOE is effectively limited to the AOE of your subsequent attackers
Sonya for PVE
What is Nightmare?
Nightmare is a new ability for Sonya that lets her deal extra damage with each hit on an opponent.
Here are the rules on how it works:
- The Nightmare debuff lasts for 2 turns (i.e. 1 player turn)
- When the Nightmare debuff is active, every time the affected enemy takes damage, bonus Nightmare damage is inflicted. At +5 full potential, Nightmare damage is 100% of Sonya’s Magic ATK.
- Nightmare damage is calculated just like Sonya’s normal skill damage, so Sonya’s M.ATK, crit rate, crit damage, property damage, chain damage, buffs etc all work as normal on Nightmare damage.
- However, Nightmare damage does not apply its own chain stacks and does not trigger “on hit” effects.
- Nightmare triggers when the enemy is hit with other skill attacks, but it does not trigger off counter damage, burn damage, knockback damage, etc.
- Nightmare triggers per hit, not per chain (i.e. skills that increase chain count will not make Nightmare trigger more times).
- Nightmare damage will still work even if Sonya dies – however if she dies, she loses all her buffs so Nightmare damage would only be calculated off her base stats.
It might seem complex, but essentially, the more consistently you hit with LPG Sonya, the more damage she’ll do.
Here are some examples showing how much damage LPG Sonya can deal, based on her team composition:
| Hits after playing LPG Sonya | LPG Sonya’s total damage (ex chains) |
| 0 hits: Sonya is the last attacker | 300% |
| 3 hits: Nightmare Bunny Eclipse alone | 600% (9-tile AOE 300% + 5-tile AOE 300%) |
| 7 hits: Curse Celia alone | 1,000% (9-tile AOE 1,000%) |
| 10 hits: Curse Celia + Nightmare Bunny Eclipse | 1,300% (9-tile AOE 1,000% + 5-tile AOE 300%) |
| 15 hits: Curse Celia + Wild Dog Luvencia | 1,800% (9-tile AOE 1,000% + 6-tile AOE 800%) |
Clearly, LPG Sonya’s headline damage is very high. However, there are two important things to note.
Sonya’s initial attack has a wide area of effect (AOE), but the powerful ‘Nightmare’ damage only activates based on the AOE of attacks from your other heroes. This means Sonya doesn’t always deal significant damage across her entire 3×3 area. The actual area where she does the most damage is limited by how wide an area your other heroes can attack.
Keep in mind that the Shadowed Dream Sonya version of the character only attacks in a cross-shaped area (covering 5 tiles), which is smaller than the attack range of the original LPG Sonya.
LPG Sonya’s damage is reduced because her attacks don’t benefit from large chain combos as effectively as other characters. Typically, players build up high chain multipliers with characters like Celia before unleashing their strongest attacker to maximize damage. But with Sonya, she starts attacking quickly, preventing you from building a large chain. This means her first attack will only have a 1.1x damage boost from chaining, her second will have 1.2x, and so on – a less efficient way to deal damage.
Example:
- If you play LPG Sonya and then Curse Celia (buffed by MB Celia), LPG Sonya deals 1,000% damage before chains. This equates to 1,560% damage including chains.
- If you play Curse Celia (buffed by MB Celia) and then a final attacker with a 650% damage skill, the total damage on the final atta ck is 1,560% including chains (650% x 2.4).
- So in this scenario, even though LPG Sonya looks like she has 1,000% headline damage, her actual performance is around the same as a 650% damage attack.
Team building for LPG Sonya
There are quite limited options for how to efficiently build LPG Sonya in fiend hunts.
Given that most teams have 5 members, you’ll likely dedicate two spots to characters who support your team, one for those who boost attack or magic attack (like Helena or Teresse), and another for those who increase damage based on elemental properties (such as Diana or Refi). This means you’ll only have space for a maximum of two main damage dealers, especially after including LPG Sonya in your team.
As a big Sonya fan, I’ve been experimenting with team builds, and she really shines when paired with other dark magic damage dealers. The idea is to stack both magical attack buffs and buffs that boost dark property damage. It’s a cool strategy, but honestly, there aren’t a ton of dark magic attackers to choose from right now. We’ve got Celia, who’s great at building up chains but doesn’t hit super hard, Eclipse who does good damage but isn’t as strong with chains, and Nartas, who’s all damage and no chains. What we really need is a dark magic attacker who can do both – strong damage and good chain stacking. Hopefully, we’ll get one soon!
If you want to build an all dark magic team, then Celia + Eclipse is probably your best bet.
For a team with strong physical attackers, Celia and Luvencia work well together because Luvencia hits hard and builds up chains quickly. If you’re combining physical and magical damage, you’ll likely need Teresse with the Medical Club to boost both attack types. However, this isn’t ideal – a team that attacks frequently won’t fully benefit from Beach Angel Teresse, and using Teresse might mean you can’t also include Onsen Manager Liberta.
When deciding who goes first in battle, keep these points in mind: LPG Sonya always wants to act first. However, if you’re using a dark team, Shadowed Dream Sonya shouldn’t be the first to move. Here’s a simple way to remember that:
- To play Shadowed Dream Sonya: Chain stacker > Sonya > Main attacker
- To play LPG Sonya: Sonya > Chain stacker > Main attacker
PVE game modes
LPG Sonya is great at defeating fiends, but she really excels in guild raids. As her character suggests, Sonya works best with a team! Guild raids let you build a larger team – up to seven members – allowing you to maximize nightmare damage by including more damage-dealing heroes after Sonya.
Sonya is decent in most PvE fights, but struggles when enemies are spread out. In PvE, it’s usually best to have your team attack different groups of enemies to quickly eliminate them all. However, Sonya performs best when your whole team focuses fire on the same enemies over and over.
LPG Sonya does not work well in Last Night because the enemy is unaffected by the Nightmare debuff.
Sonya for PVP
Sonya isn’t a strong choice for player-versus-player (PVP) battles. Her skills are expensive to use and don’t have a big enough effect on the game. To get significant damage with her, your entire team needs to be specifically built around her, which isn’t practical in PVP. Plus, she’s easily defeated because she doesn’t have much health.
Sonya’s exclusive accessory
Sonya’s special weapon offers a small stat boost, which is helpful, but doesn’t significantly impact gameplay outside of competitive ranked matches. It’s more of a cosmetic item or a treat for dedicated players, and generally not worth spending in-game currency on unless you’re willing to spend a lot.
Hey everyone, just a heads-up! They’ve recently changed how accessory stats work, which is awesome. Now, you can actually get Crit Damage (C.DMG) on your accessories, like with the Venomous Touch! It’s a big change and opens up some cool new build possibilities.
Conclusion
Sonya is now essential for tackling the hardest content in the game. Her Shadowed Dream version has an incredibly effective ability that weakens enemies, making her valuable even in teams that aren’t focused on dark heroes, like those used in the current Fiend Hunt. The new costume for Light/Peace/Goddess Sonya provides strong area-of-effect damage, but requires careful team planning to maximize its potential.
Currently, Sonya offers the best value of all the Halloween characters available, making her a worthwhile character to try and obtain.
