BAFTAs 2025: David Tennant Hilariously Asks ‘BAFTA Gods’ For Help; Shoutouts to Selena Gomez in Opening Monologue

At the BAFTAs 2025, David Tennant kicked off the event with a jovial and amusing start. He blended music and humor to captivate the audience, performing a comical version of The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”. Declaring that he walked 500 miles specifically to host this year’s BAFTAs, he added a playful twist to his grand entrance.

In a classic kilt, Tennant strutted into the Royal Festival Hall, playfully serenading Emilia Pérez, who stars as Selena Gomez, with a light-hearted tune. Following the performance’s script, he sought guidance from the “BAFTA deities,” and Scottish actor Brian Cox joined in by singing an altered rendition of the melody.

He was accompanied by audience members such as James McAvoy, Camila Cabello, and Anna Kendrick, who each performed a part of the well-known melody.

In a surprising and amusing gesture, the actor called out to Selena Gomez, belting out, “I’ll strive diligently to be the one for you, Selena,” while walking by as she was seated among the spectators.

In a lively mix of wit and contemporary references, Tennant peppered his opening speech with clever sarcasm and pop culture jabs. He even acknowledged and poked fun at actors and movies like The Brutalist, Wicked, and others.

Besides taking aim at Donald Trump, Tennant playfully remarked that The Brutalist is a movie showcasing exceptional architecture, and he humorously added that it’s the most daring architectural representation in film this year, aside from Donald Trump’s hair on ‘The Apprentice’.

Tennant playfully suggested that his speeches should be the polar opposite of film lengths, implying they should be brief and concise, in contrast to the extended running times of the nominated films.

Last year, David Tennant was the host of the event. In 2025, the BAFTA Awards will be held at the Royal Festival Hall located at the Southbank Centre in London.
