At the BAFTA Awards ceremony held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, Edward Berger’s film Conclave was awarded as the Best British Film. It outshone other strong competitors such as Gladiator II, Bird, Kneecap, Hard Truths, and Blitz.
Beyond that, the movie was the sole nominee for two categories during the year – Outstanding British Film and Best Film. After the victor was declared, the director graciously ascended the stage to receive the award and give a heartfelt speech.
In his speech, Berger expressed his appreciation to both the audience and the film’s cast. He stated, “Traditional gatherings often divide us nowadays, making it challenging to maintain our faith in such situations. However, that’s precisely why we create films, and that’s why we made this particular movie.
Additionally, he expressed his gratitude with the words, “I appreciate it greatly. It seems there’s always a flaw, yet it’s through those flaws that light shines.
At this year’s award ceremony, it was Conclave that garnered the most nominations. With a total of 12 nominations, the film took the lead, with other notable titles trailing behind. Interestingly, this isn’t Berger’s first movie to receive such a high number of nods. In fact, the director’s previous project, All Quiet on the Western Front, also managed to secure as many as 14 nominations in 2024.
Speaking of the newest movie, “Conclave” is an adaptation from Robert Harris’ 2016 novel with the same title. This intriguing tale unfolds within the walls of Vatican City and can be found streaming on Peacock.
