BAFTAs 2025: Conclave Gets Honored With Best Film Trophy After Also Bagging Outstanding British Movie

At the BAFTA Awards, Conclave emerged victorious as the Best Film. Earlier, it had also been awarded the honor of Outstanding British Film. To make the night even more memorable, the team was also successful in outshining other contenders such as Emilia Perez, A Complete Unknown, Anora, and The Brutalist to claim the trophy.

Before the major victory, the movie was ahead in the nominations with a total of 12 recognitions from the jury. Director Edward Berger had previously accepted an award on behalf of the Conclave team during a previous ceremony.

During that moment, the director chose to express his political views, and in his speech upon receiving an award, he declared, “We find ourselves in a time of democratic turmoil.” He went on to explain, “Structures designed to unite us seem instead to drive us apart, and it can be challenging to maintain hope under such circumstances. But that’s what filmmaking is for, and that’s why we made this movie. I appreciate your support very much. There’s a flaw in everything, but it’s through those flaws that light enters.

Simultaneously, Conclave narrates the story following a Pope’s demise, whereupon the Church assumes control to ensure smooth governance within the country. As the power struggle unfolds, hidden scandals concerning potential popes are exposed, and the director introduces a thought-provoking twist to the climax.

Ralph Fiennes plays the lead role in the movie, portraying the character of Cardinal Lawrence.
