BAFTAs 2025: Brady Corbet Wins Best Director For The Brutalist As Film Continues to Dominate This Year’s Show

At the BAFTAs 2025, Brady Corbet receives the Best Director accolade for his extraordinary historical drama The Brutalist. This three-and-a-half-hour opus narrates the compelling tale of László Tóth, a Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor who migrates to America.

The film delves into themes of grief and healing as Tóth endeavors to restart his life. Along the way, he faces challenges involving substance abuse, a volatile benefactor portrayed by Guy Pearce, and the intense feelings that accompany attempting to rekindle his relationship with his wife (Felicity Jones), who he believed perished during the war.

In my acceptance speech, I gratefully acknowledged the event organizers for recognizing me alongside such esteemed filmmakers. I took a moment to express my gratitude towards the collaborative nature of filmmaking, emphasizing that being bestowed with the title “Best Director” is somewhat paradoxical because success in this field is an outcome of collective effort.

Corbet expressed his heartfelt appreciation, stating, “I’m deeply honored to be in the same category as my fellow nominees this year, Ali [Abbasi] and James [Mangold], not just for this ceremony but for all filmmakers. To be considered Best Director is almost laughable, but I am incredibly grateful for this recognition.

Apart from expressing his gratitude to the audience, he also acknowledged and thanked his family, team, and cast for their understanding and resilience throughout the seven-year journey of making “The Brutalist”. Corbet further mentioned, “To my team, my family – thank you for enduring me through the last seven or eight years. That’s it.

Despite having a modest budget of $9.6 million, The Brutalist has emerged as a strong competitor during this awards season. At the 2025 BAFTAs, it secured three significant wins: Adrien Brody in the Leading Actor category, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score by Daniel Blumberg.
