Despite the Los Angeles wildfires causing disruption to the Awards season, the show is continuing as usual. The BAFTA nominations were revealed in London on January 15th, keeping the competition wide open this year. The crime-musical “Emilia Pérez” and the papal thriller “Conclave” are currently frontrunners with 11 and 12 nominations each.
Despite numerous award ceremonies being delayed due to the destruction, BAFTA has persevered. In addition to Emilia Pérez and Conclave, movies such as A Complete Unknown, The Brutalist, and Anora are all vying for top awards in categories like Best Film.
It’s rather unexpected that this year’s top musical, Wicked, wasn’t included in the schedule. Leaving out the movie adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu raises some questions, particularly given the whispers about its potential Oscar nomination.
In the latest award announcements, Anora the Brutalist, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez’s films, along with Dune: Part 2 directed by Denis Villeneuve and The Substance created by Carolie Fargeat, have all been nominated for Best Director. Interestingly, Nosferatu, a Gothic thriller, received five nominations this time, having previously gained no recognition at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Here is the full list of nominations: [provide link to the nomination list]
