Bad Bunny will star in his first major movie role in the historical drama “Porto Rico.” The film boasts an impressive cast, featuring Edward Norton, Javier Bardem, and Viggo Mortensen.
The film is the directorial debut of Residente, the Grammy-winning Puerto Rican rapper René Pérez Joglar. Reports from Variety and Deadline describe it as a sweeping “Caribbean western” based on the real history of Puerto Rico.
Javier Pérez Joglar wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, the Oscar-winning writer of films like “Birdman” and “The Revenant.” Renowned director Alejandro González Iñárritu is an executive producer on the project. Pérez Joglar shared, “I’ve always wanted to make a film about Puerto Rico, and its real history has often been debated. This movie is about reclaiming our identity and telling that story with the power and truth it deserves.”
The film is being made by 1868 Studios, a company formed by Pérez Joglar and Sony Music to create stories rooted in culture. Edward Norton, Bill Migliore, and Michael Bederman are producing through their company, Class 5 Films, which previously made movies like “Motherless Brooklyn” and “The Painted Veil.”
According to Norton, René is a master of words and rhythm, and now people will see his talent as a visual artist too. He believes pairing René with Bad Bunny to share the real history of Puerto Rico will be an explosive and powerful combination.
“Porto Rico” received support from Live Nation Studios, Class 5 Films, and various other partners, including the Kwanza Jones & José E. Feliciano Initiative, Mike and Sukey Novogratz, and Noah Assad. UTA Independent Film Group is managing the film’s distribution.
Bad Bunny is having a huge month! He recently performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, an event watched by an average of 128.2 million people – making it one of the most popular halftime shows in history. Plus, he made Grammy history earlier in February as the first Spanish-language artist to win Album of the Year for his album, “Debí Tirar Más Fotos.”
This movie is a big move for Bad Bunny, taking him from memorable supporting parts in films like “Bullet Train” and Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming project to the leading role. Featuring a strong cast and skilled filmmakers, “Porto Rico” is already generating a lot of excitement for its 2026 release.
