Baby Reindeer Star Richard Gadd Reflects on ‘Intolerable Pressure’ of Fame and Success

Richard Gadd, starring as Donny in the acclaimed Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer, discussed the hurdles he encountered while portraying his character in this biographical production. As the show garners six nominations for the upcoming BAFTA TV Awards, the creator-actor shared that there was an overwhelming sense of pressure accompanying the success of the Netflix mini-series.

As I sat down for an exclusive chat with the media, I couldn’t help but spill my heart out about the rollercoaster journey that has been my life lately. “The show,” I confessed, “has taken me to the very edge, moments when the strain felt unbearable. It’s been a whirlwind, a relentless storm.

He mentioned, “I’m not quite at the stage for self-analysis just yet. What I truly need is a genuine break to help me regroup and find my footing again, as I currently feel overwhelmed.

The actor announced that the show had its premiere on a Sunday, and by Thursday, enthusiastic fans were requesting his autograph at his doorstep. Gadd confessed that he’s still adjusting to the celebrity status that followed the success of the miniseries.

Originally, the showrunner shared, “As a comic who primarily performed in art houses with only a few audience members each evening, transitioning into this larger setting has been quite an adaptation for me. I’m still acclimating, and even going to the grocery store requires careful consideration these days.

Not long after the show’s premiere, Fiona Harvey – allegedly portrayed as Gadd’s stalker – sued Netflix for defamation. She argued that the story was an outrageous falsehood, perhaps the most significant fabrication ever told on TV.

All the episodes of Baby Reindeer are available to stream on Netflix.
