Known for its distinctive spins on established game genres and titles, Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming title, Avowed, marks their most ambitious project thus far. It seems as if just yesterday that the Irvine-based studio was creating the standout South Park game, The Stick of Truth, or even further back arguably the top Fallout game, New Vegas. Over the years, Obsidian has been gathering steam with successful releases such as The Outer Worlds and Pentiment.
Despite encountering some challenges during development, Avowed represents uncharted ground as an engaging first-person fantasy role-playing game. Fortunately, the team’s prior experience and lessons learned have greatly contributed to its success. In essence, Avowed is a remarkable embodiment of Obsidian’s past games, though it still has room for improvement.
In the vast, enchanting realm known as The Living Lands, the story unfolds as a dreadful curse called the Dreamscourge sweeps through lands, adding to the unrest in the area. You are dispatched as an emissary of the Aedyr Empire to examine the situation and hopefully bring peace back to the region.
In a style reminiscent of Role-Playing Games (RPGs), you stand out as exceptional among extraordinary characters, for you are a Godlike being – an entity blessed by a deity. You have the freedom to select unique, fungus-like physical alterations, and in return, you’ll receive additional powers to complement your extensive collection of spells, weapons (including blades and firearms). To aid you on your journey through The Living Lands as you unravel the mystery of the Dreamscourge and shape the destiny of its inhabitants, you’ll be joined by recruitable companions who will travel alongside you.
In Avowed, although its concept may seem familiar due to similar games in the past, it stands out in numerous ways. One of the most striking differences is the graphics that immediately grab your attention from the opening scene. With vibrant and eye-catching color schemes and enhanced details added to every character you engage with, they truly stand out. This visual experience is further enhanced by the game’s high-performance mode, which maintains a steady 60 frames per second and 1800p resolution on Xbox Series X, ensuring a smooth and immersive gaming experience.
The game’s design invites extensive exploration as you traverse diverse regions such as Fort Northreach, Paradis, Emerald Stair, and more. By skillfully employing lighting, intricately shaping each landscape, and populating them with unique creatures and characters, the journey never feels like a tedious task, whether it’s to gather crafting resources or simply uncover hidden surprises along winding paths.
In contrast to the expansive landscapes of games like Skyrim or Breath of the Wild, Avowed’s map is relatively smaller. However, it doesn’t lack in richness. The game’s design embodies the idea that “less is more,” offering a compact yet captivating world filled with diverse wildernesses and bustling cities. These areas are populated with voice-acted Non-Player Characters (NPCs) who entice you to engage with them, contributing to an immersive, lived-in atmosphere.
In a non-spoilery manner, this tale and its numerous side missions effectively blend information about the Dreamscourge predicament and historical lore, ensuring you don’t feel overloaded. Regardless of your familiarity with the Pillars of Eternity game universe, you’ll quickly feel comfortable and grasp the terminology of the Living Lands.
Back in 2023, during an interview with PC Gamer, the CEO of Obsidian revealed that Avowed was initially conceived as their take on Skyrim. However, the team wisely decided to chart their own course instead. Despite the unavoidable comparisons between the two games, Avowed and Skyrim share several classic RPG elements such as looting, health and mana (or “Essence”) potions, a vast array of weapons and spells for multi-class characters, decisions that can significantly shape your destiny, and companions. As a fan, I eagerly anticipate seeing how Avowed will carve its unique niche within the realm of RPG gaming.
Despite being commonplace, Avowed’s implementation of these mechanics leans more towards perfecting the wheel rather than creating something new. Characters such as Kai and Marius serve as excellent demonstrations of this, with your recruit-able team offering a diverse array of intriguing personalities that compensate for the silent protagonist.
In this production, every actor delivers exceptional vocal performances, notably Brandon Keener, who voiced Mass Effect’s Garrus and shines as Kai. Each character skillfully navigates the balance between engaging camaraderie and sincerity without being overly dominant. Whether they’re partaking in conversations with NPCs or engaging in private chats around the campfire at night, their performances are both entertaining and heartfelt.
Enjoyment in this RPG arises from experimenting with various character classes, and the numerous choices you can make in both the primary plot and side missions. The game Avowed is rich in these opportunities. Known as “backgrounds,” your Envoy provides a variety of backstories to select from, each offering unique opportunities for conversations with NPCs, whether casual or during crucial story moments.
To illustrate, my past as a War Hero presented us with unique advantages. We could either instill fear in our enemies in situations where we normally wouldn’t be able to, or swiftly reach destinations at an accelerated pace. Additionally, enhancing specific attributes like ‘Might’ and ‘Constitution’ opens up additional dialogue options for you.
In case you choose an incorrect dialogue option that doesn’t align with your character’s background, don’t worry! The game’s auto-save feature allows for easy rewind and correction of mistakes by taking you back to a similar point. This feature is also beneficial if you’re curious about the consequences of selecting different options without starting an entirely new game from scratch.
According to how you enhance their skills, every companion becomes equally powerful while maintaining their endearing qualities. However, when it comes to your role as the Envoy, that’s where you and Avowed really excel.
The numerous weapons at your disposal make the initial stages of Avowed particularly fun as you experiment with different strategies. You’ll find an assortment of swords, guns, spellbooks, maces, axes, spears, bows, grenades, and more to choose from and combine according to your preferred gameplay style. Obsidian has done a commendable job in ensuring each weapon has its unique characteristics. The combat is fast-paced and rewarding, as each weapon offers distinct advantages.
Swinging a sword or an axe offers a pleasing slicing noise and weight, while wands provide a swift, captivating feel, reminiscent of the “Stupefy!” spell from Harry Potter. Casting grimoire spells is incredibly satisfying as they bring about destruction. Firearms such as arquebus rifles emit an ominous crackle before obliterating enemies, and with each critical hit, your controller vibrates, intensifying combat encounters.
This version maintains the essence of the original while using simpler language and providing a more natural flow to the sentence structure.
As a devoted gamer, I can’t help but feel hindered by certain aspects of this game. The absence of a target lock feature often leaves me in a predicament, as I find myself frequently having to dodge enemy attacks. This requires me to repeatedly switch my focus, which can be a continual annoyance.
Moreover, the limitation of only being able to assign two weapon loadouts at once poses an issue for players like me who enjoy experimenting with various combinations. To do so, we are forced to navigate through the disorganized inventory menus to un-equip and re-equip our gear, which can be a time-consuming process.
Despite having multiple sets of favorite equipment, the extensive need for upgrade materials in Avowed’s weapons and armor, which must be acquired through side quests, locating merchants, and exploring the Living Lands, might persuade you to stick with the two to four weapons you currently have equipped, rather than experimenting with new ones.
If you’re not the kind of RPG player who delights in thoroughly examining every corner before wrapping up the main storyline, you might find the challenge level quite steep when playing on Normal or higher difficulty settings. On the positive side, this encourages you to traverse more of this captivating world and uncover its array of intriguing side quests and diverse characters.
For individuals who prefer to complete the tale swiftly with a bit of intrigue, they’ll encounter obstacles such as hitting a wall regularly, requiring them to gather specific items like Paradisian’s Root and Hylea’s Talon on a frequent basis.
To wrap things up, much like a typical Bethesda game, Avowed also encounters its fair share of glitches. These include issues such as asset pop-in, frame rate drops, missing NPCs for missions, and stuttering head movements. A persistent problem with the in-game audio for companions has been reported – often it’s too faint, distorted, or reminiscent of being submerged underwater.
This issue appears to be easily fixed with a quick update, and in the interim, you can try restarting the game. However, even a minor inconvenience like this can still impact the overall enjoyment of the game.
Although there are some issues that need fixing, such as bugs and the necessity of crafting material grinding for upgrades, Avowed provides an extraordinary role-playing game adventure through the Living Lands. The world is intriguing to explore, the story is engaging and hard to put down, and the combat against a diverse roster of enemies is incredibly rewarding. Essentially, it’s another excellent installment in the beloved RPG genre that will likely be enjoyed for years to come.
